We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Star and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexis, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Although my business is in the hair industry, ironically I never had an interest in cosmetology. However, I’ve always been a creative person, a trait I have from my parents. Faux locs became a big hair trend and I wanted to try them out. I’d always been picky about my hairstyles because I like a particular esthetic, a natural look, no matter the style. Because of this, I’d often style my own hair myself. So like all the times before, I decided to do my research and install my own custom faux locs. They were so nice that I did them a second time not long after, wanting to perfect them even more. Between those two installs on myself, I received so many compliments! At this time I was a student in college and also working part time in retail/customer service. I’d been working since I was in high school, but even then, I had side hustles such as doing lashes and selling clothes. I realized the potential of my custom faux locs and knew immediately I wanted to make it into a business. I brainstormed, did additional research, practiced, then put my plan into fruition.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
THE LOC EXPERIENCE is a salon specializing in custom faux loc extensions. These faux locs are “not your average faux locs” as both the curation and installation methods are unique. Each set of locs for every install is hand-crafted prior to appointment and installed individually. THE LOC EXPERIENCE locs possess a natural esthetic, giving the client a chance to experience the look of authentic locs without the long-term commitment.

Professionalism came easily because I’ve always worked in customer service based environments in my previous jobs in which I always thoroughly enjoyed. I take pride in my business and providing an unforgettable aura and exceptional customer service.

A lesson that I’ve learned since owning my business has been to always have multiple streams of passive income. As one of the downsides to owning a business is it is not always consistent. In my case, I have slower seasons than others. Such as winter is my slow season versus spring/summer are my peak seasons. Therefore it’s always best to be mindful of your businesses patterns and plan ahead!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We’d have brunch at some of my favorite breakfast spots; Breakfast at Barney’s, Toast on Lenox. Garden Parc. We’d visit Shops at Buckhead or Phipps Plaza and do some shopping. We’d also check out Ponce City Market. Then we’d do dinner at one of my favorite restaurants; Chops, Rock Steady. STK. Following dinner we’d stop by a lounge such as, Parkside, Sivas or Copper Cove for hookah and drinks.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Although I started THE LOC EXPERIENCE before she was born (or thought about, lol), my daughter, now 2.5 y/o, has been such a motivation for me to keep going and keep elevating. She is full of love and the light of my life! She makes me feel like I can conquer anything I put my mind to and that’s exactly what I plan to continue doing. She was born a year after I started my business, I know everything was in Gods Plan. It is all for her and this is just the beginning!
