We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Odufu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexis, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
It was 2020 right after the pandemic hit. I had just signed a lease for a brand new apartment and lost my job at the hospital in the same week. I was panicking! Uncomfortable situations have a funny way of pushing you to finally make the major move you were always unsure about. I had been sitting on my idea to start a lash business for many years at that point. I woke up one morning and remembered seeing all of my bank accounts go into the negative. To be honest the thought process behind starting my business was survival! It was time to get my ideas out of my head and into my reality. I did not do any deep research, I just used my last little bit of change to get a small shipment of products to begin with. The building process of my business became like therapy to me. I discovered a new sense of creativity that I did not know I possessed. I was having so much fun with the branding, the at home photoshoots, the personalization of my brand because it was MY brand. I had a say in every decision that was made and I fell in love with that privilege. As time went on, I opened a branding and marketing agency offering website design, print, and plenty more business services. The branding I produced for my lash business was the starting point for my graphic design business. It is so funny how a little bit of flight or fight can strongly impact the trajectory of your life.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is called RXLEX the RX has to do with prescription and my name is Alexis. I sell lashes in pink bottles and I am known as, “yo neighborhood lash dealer, supplying you with your daily dose of beauty.” I set up an online lash pharmacy. I am obsessed with the color pink and lashes I wanted to make purchasing lashes for your everyday beauty looks super convenient and fun! When you visit my website, my whole brand is of pretty girls wearing pink ski masks. The masks do come off but the point of it was to show that expression and professionalism can be fun. I wanted to add an interesting urban twist to branding and was able to create a vision I have never seen before.

From there, I got into website design, graphic design, and creative directing. I have been the one to do all of my branding, photoshoots, and creative endeavors all by myself. I then began to assist other businesses with their own personal branding by finding new ways for them to brand that were outside of the box and would guarantee to create a lasting impression. I am most excited the amazing people I meet along the way. I get to stretch my creativity in many ways by all of the different brands I get to work with. It is never a dull moment,

It was only God who has gotten me to this position. I run my businesses full time and I have not worked for anyone else in about three years now. My journey of entrepreneurship has not been easy. I feel like entrepreneurship is such a personal and spiritual journey. It has truly transformed me into the woman that I am today. A few years back, I was sleeping on a friend’s couch just trying to figure it out. I overcame all of my challenges by still getting up every day. Every morning that you open your eyes you are given a new opportunity to change anything that you want to.

I have been taught so many lessons along the way. Self love was a huge lesson for me. Your love for yourself is attached to your worth. If you do not play about yourself, you will not let anybody else play with you. I also learned to not be governed by my emotions. Emotions are only visitors they come and they go. It is important to be able to find your own peace through any storm.

I want the world to know that I am currently living my dream and it is possible. I am a prime example of the person who was “registered” to have no chance in this life. The odds were ALL against me. The life you would like to live is not a myth, you just need to get it out of your head and right in front of you. My brand is literally a representation of my vivid imagination. I was able to bring my daydreams to life.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
God needs to get my first shoutout because if only you could have seen where He has brought me from and where He has brought me to. My mom Florence is the epitome of love. She is my lifeline and my strongest support system. The way she prays over me, roots for me, and challenges me, I do not know if I can ever truly repay her for the role she has played in my life. She is truly an angel in human form.
