Meet Alexis Martinez | ADHD Nutrition and Wellness Coach

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexis, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Healthy Brown Girl started in 2018 as an Instagram page where I documented my personal weight loss journey. While sharing my journey, I gained a small following of women who were inspired by my progress and began asking questions about how I achieved my success. Answering their questions and sharing tips with them led me to expand Healthy Brown Girl into a blog, where I focused on topics like intermittent fasting and nutrition.
As my passion for nutrition and helping women grew, I decided to go back to school to get my degree in nutrition and dietetics. With that, Healthy Brown Girl evolved into a coaching brand, offering nutrition and weight loss support to women.
More recently, after being diagnosed with ADHD, I started researching how ADHD affects women, especially Black women, many of whom are either undiagnosed or struggling with symptoms without realizing the connection. I discovered how ADHD can impact our eating habits, impulse control, and the ability to stay consistent with healthy routines. My diagnosis caused me to reflect back on my own journey and gain clarity on how ADHD had influenced my habits and my relationship with food. I knew there had to be other women out there like me.
That’s when the full vision of Healthy Brown Girl came to life. Today, it’s a space designed specifically for Black women who have ADHD; or who experience similar challenges, to help them navigate impulsive snacking, build sustainable habits, and reach their weight and wellness goals in a way that works for their unique brains and lifestyles.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My career as a nutritionist and founder of Healthy Brown Girl LLC. began with my own healing and self-discovery through a 55-pound weight loss journey. At the time, I was 37, burnt out, working in a stressful, low-paying HR assistant role, struggling with anxiety and depression. Inspired by my transformation, and desire to help other achieve the same success led me to pursue a degree in nutrition and dietetics. Despite the fear of quitting my job and returning to school full-time as a 38-year-old wife, mother of three, and someone navigating mental health challenges, My faith as a believer in Jesus, prayer, and therapy, helped me manage those challenges, and I ended up earning both my undergraduate degree and a master’s in positive psychology over the course of 4 years.
These experiences taught me resilience, discipline, and self-awareness. Traits I did not have prior to my journey. I discovered that my ADHD, depression, and anxiety don’t define me but make me stronger. I also learned that nutrition is the key to wellness, and mindset is its foundation.
In my career as a public health nutritionist, I have the privilege of empowering minority, low-income mothers with nutrition education while offering encouragement and hope through my interactions with them. Seeing a bit of myself in the women I serve drives my purpose and fulfillment in my career choice.
Healthy Brown Girl LLC. stands out because it was born from my personal journey and a deep understanding of the struggles minority women face with self-love, mental health, and their relationship with food. My coaching integrates nutrition education with mental wellness strategies like mindfulness, self-awareness, and self-compassion, offering a holistic approach to self-improvement.
I want the world to know that my journey, guided by God’s purpose over my life, has equipped me to help others. The name “Healthy Brown Girl” was a gift from Him long before I understood its full meaning. I believe all women have the potential to grow and heal, no matter what life throws at them. With faith, guidance, and the right support, transformation IS possible.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in the metro-Atlanta area, so there are soooo many places that are fun and exciting to visit. If my best friend were visiting, the rooftop at Ponce City Market would definitely be a spot we would visit for a day of shopping and hanging out. JoJo’s bar in colony square is also a cute vibe at for drinks and music. I love hiking, so we would take a day to go to either Kennesaw mountain or Stone mountain for hiking and probably visit Cava afterwards for some healthy nutritious food after. Top Golf or 3rd spot would also be a place we’d go for a night of fun and drinks. I love winery’s also. There is a smaller winery near my home called The Strands Vinyard and Winery which is a nice close to home alternative to Chateau Elan. Spa Land would also be a must for a day at the spa to relax and unwind. Lastly, I would take her to visit The Battery for a fun day at the movies, maybe an escape room activity, and dinner. Downtown Powder Springs, amphitheater for a food truck festival or concert, or a show at The Strand theater in Marietta Square would be also be some chill activities.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my success to my husband, Tony, and my kids, Jesiah, Jaden, and Calie, who have been my unwavering support system throughout my weight loss and education journey. Tony has always been my cheerleader and rock, offering encouragement and a shoulder to cry on when I felt like giving up. When God planted the idea of Healthy Brown Girl in my heart, Tony was the first to believe in its potential and supported me when I made the bold decision to quit my job to pursue my undergraduate degree in Nutrition and Dietetics and a master’s in Positive Psychology. My family has sacrificed so much time with me so I could pursue my goals, and I’m forever grateful for their love and understanding.
I also want to dedicate my success to God, who has been the foundation of it all. He gave me the desire to help others, provided for my family during uncertain times while was in school full -time, and inspired the vision for Healthy Brown Girl LLC. God continues to guide my steps and bless the work I do to bring this vision to life.
