We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Kelly and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexis, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When starting the Mocha L’amour De Soi Company I wanted to encourage women to be selfish and focus on their individual happiness and wellbeing by enhancing their outer beauty and normalizing radiating happiness from within and being their true selves, not who or what society sees as beautiful.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The Mocha L’amour De Soi Company is deeper than hair and makeup. As a new small business, we have so much growing and learning to do. The first step I had to take to get to where I am today was to believe in myself and stop worrying about others’ expectations of me. A major lesson learned was to not expect things to be perfect before sharing just stay consistent and try your best. I want the world to know that I personally had to rebuild my confidence and learn how to put myself first after graduating from Howard University. I did exactly that by becoming crown conscious, manifesting the person I want to be, and speaking positivity over my life. Ever since my change in mindset, lifes opportunities have been endless and I want the same for every woman my business comes in contact with.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I was born and raised in Atlanta, GA, and I would show someone what I call my Atlanta. My go-to breakfast spot is La Petit Marche. I would take them to Atlantic Station, Perimeter Mall, and Lenox to shop depending on the kind of shopping they are trying to do. Must-see sites are the millennium gates museum, the Mercedes Benz stadium at night, and Sweetwater creek state park. Good places to hang out for drinks and fun would be the Battery, Peter St, Edgewood, and Buckhead bars. Some other must-visit establishments would be Bailey’s wine cellar, Tom Dick and Hanks, and Hattie Maries.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out Kenley Duke for introducing me to the film and photography industry. Thanks to the connections made after one job as a COVID officer/production assistant on a GQ shoot she asked me to work on, I have had multiple opportunities to take my business to a level that I never thought of. I have worked alongside a wonderful makeup artist by the name of Danielle Mitchell on many sets where I was able to enhance my skills as a makeup artist and learn glam on set protocols. I was also extended the opportunity to work on multiple Bronner Brothers and My Tropical Roots social media projects as the key hairstylist. If it wasn’t for Kenley I wouldn’t be where I am today.
