We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Kay and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexis, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
My favorite quote that I came up with during a battle with my mental health for the first time was “Are you going to pass or fail”. This quote has been with me for many years. I used to get very overwhelmed with things and God testing my faith. There were many times I’d want to just give up, but I kept hearing “are you going to pass or fail? Life is a test. That quote pushed me to keep going because if I pass the test there will be a blessing/reward behind it, no matter how long it takes. If I fail the test and give in I’d never receive what I’ve been aiming for or praying about.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is a bakery by the name of Tasty Melts. This business has been thriving since 2017. I remember having to use my funds to purchase ingredients to test things out and give it away for free just to prefect my craft and gain clientele. Over time it went from a hobby to a passion. My presentation and consistency as far as the taste got better and better over the years. What makes this business unique is the custom/signature desserts we come up with. The business went from 3-4 loyal clients to 50+ in the past 5 years. I have people approaching me in public calling me the “cake lady”. The impact I have on my clients is very intriguing, because they aren’t just a number to me they’re my support system. Without them there would be no us. It was not easy getting to where we are. Being a sole proprietor and funding your own business is tough, but it’s worth the hard work, sweat, and tears. During the journey of the business growth I learned to be disciplined and separate personal funds and business funds. Also don’t look at customers as a way to fund your business or pay your bills, look at them like family and treat them well. Customer service is vital in business, no matter if you’re selling products for $1 or $1,000 everyone is treated equally. We build unbelievable bonds just through a dessert. Stressed backwards is desserts, so next time you’re stressed give us a call.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my bestfriend was to visit Birmingham, AL I would take her to Ruby Sunshine in Homewood, Alabama. They’re a breakfast/brunch spot that’s Nola based. Next, we would go to the Birmingham Museum or Botanical Garden. After that once the sun sets we would visit Moonshine rooftop to end our night.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give a special thanks to my boss friend Monique Shine with Monopoly Boss Market. She’s is who sent you guys my information. Thank you so much Monique.
