We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexis, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The idea of my business started years before I became a licensed esthetician. In 2019, I acted on an idea that would change my life forever. The summer before my 11th grade year of high school, I was working as a lifeguard. During my break, I was searching for different skincare ingredients out of curiosity, when a light bulb hit me to create my own products. I asked my oldest sister to take me to Publix to purchase ingredients, then I quickly got to work when I got home. I created two products, an aloe vera and blueberry scrub . I let my family try and to my surprise, they raved about them, and encouraged me to sell them to others. That same day, I posted on my socials asking if anyone would be interested in trying samples of my products. Little did I know what doors that question would open for me.

I sold my products to a few classmates at school, and gained positive feedback from my peers. Before I knew it, I had several people reach out for my products. Within a month, I was on my couch brainstorming a business name with my parents. That’s when Lexipureskin was born. I continued to excel in my business. Being an entrepreneur came naturally to me because I grew up in that space. My dad has owned his own successful art business for 25 plus years so it’s safe to say, the hustle was already in my DNA. My business unlocked a passion for skincare for me. I thrived through business scholarships, sold out black fridays, and business pop ups. I was eager to continue my love for skincare after I graduated high school. That’s when I discovered the field of aesthetics, I knew right then I had found my life’s purpose.

After graduating high school in 2021, I enrolled at the Atlanta Institute of Aesthetics that fall to become a licensed esthetician. I continued to formulate my products while being an aesthetics student, but I decided to put a pause on my products as it was becoming difficult juggling both while being a full time student. My time in aesthetics school opened me up to a wealth of knowledge that helped prepare me to become a licensed esthetician. In December 2022, I graduated my 1000 clock hour program, and became licensed in January 2023. I landed my first corporate spa job shortly after. During this time, I continued my education to expand my knowledge. I attended a two day training to become certified in treating multicultural skin types by Michelle Obama’s former esthetician, Joelle Lee, who is also my mentor. I also became a certified acne specialist with Face Reality skincare. After gaining valuable experience working at my job for about a year, I knew I was ready to help people’s skin on my own. In January, 2024, I opened my own practice, LexiPureskin Aesthetics to focus on safety and effectively treating skin of color, without compromising the integrity of one’s skin. I accomplished all of this by the age of 21.

What should our readers know about your business?
My business, Lexi Pureskin Aesthetics specializes in skin health, focusing on its integrity to achieve one’s skin care desires. At Lexi Pureskin Aesthetics, we believe that taking a step up approach and understanding one’s skin as a whole first is the key to treating skin ethically.

What sets me apart from others is that I take my clients’ primary concerns seriously. I take the time to listen to my clients’ concerns, instead of treating them as if they are another price tag.
What I am most proud of is my stepping out on faith and starting my practice. It is allowing me to provide a safe, ethically driven environment, to those seeking professional guidance. I have achieved success in my business with three things, faith, work ethic, and confidence. My perseverance and ability to adapt in business has helped my success. Being an entrepreneur is not a job for everyone, but I can confidently say being a business owner was my calling. No matter what challenge or obstacle comes my way, I have the capacity to get it done, or find a solution. That is a trait about myself I admire. The hardest thing that I have encountered with my journey as a young business owner is imposter syndrome. A simple definition would be the act of one not seeing themselves as successful as they truly are, or not recognizing their current success and focusing on the next milestone. I am really driven, so at times I feel I need to be doing more all the time. Sometimes, I have a hard time recognizing the success I have already embedded in myself, because I am so eager to expound more. I overcome this by being intentional with my thinking, and practice a healthy balance between furthering my success, and education. I am also celebrating the wins I have accomplished at such a young age. I’m not perfect, so I can’t say I won’t have days where I feel like more can be done. I have also learned that if you never take the time to appreciate the hard work you’ve done on your journey of elevation, you will never find true contentment. I want the person who is reading this to know that one idea can change your life. I want you to also know that the only person who is capable of setting limitations is yourself. My success simply came from a 16 year old girl who didn’t care what others thought, didn’t ask a bunch of people for their opinion before starting, she just did it. And now 6 years later, I am living my life’s purpose. Always remember, nothing you want is out of reach. Your mindset and how much you believe in yourself will determine your success.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

If I had a friend visit Atlanta, I would firstly take them on a food tour. My first suggestion would be La Fonda, which serves authentic latin food at each of their five locations in the Atlanta area. Savage Pizza located in little five points for a mix of street and gourmet pizza. Two Urban Licks tucked away in the Old 4thWard just steps from the Atlanta Beltline for excellent upscale dining, and Bizzy Bee’s for good ole southern soul food in the Historic West End. I would end the day with dessert at The Salty Bakery, which serves a unique variety of yummy donuts, Jeni’s Ice Cream, and Morelli’s Ice Cream. I am a homebody at heart, so I would take you to the beltline, or a nice nature trail. Some of the most exciting things to check out if you are feeling more social, would be Frequency Friday at the High Museum, a Hawks game, or a concert at the State Farm Arena, and of course the world’s largest Georgia Aquarium.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The first people I would like to recognize for my success would be my family. My family has invested and supported my passions since the very beginning. Not only have they supported and invested in me, and have allowed me to start my career with zero student loans, they have helped me through every season in my business. They have helped me overcome any fears and doubts I have had as a young entrepreneur. They have never once second guessed that I didn’t have the capacity to carry out the success the Lord has for me. From them letting me use them as my guinea pig, helping bring my ideas to life, and being my advocates anytime I needed them. I would like to thank my supportive friends who are considered family. My friends who have been my cheerleader since 16 year old Alexis planted that business idea. I would also like to thank my fellow esthetician peers who have helped me on my journey as an esthetician. Kijana, also known as ( YaYa ) the owner of Vivify Body & Co in New York. She has been nothing but kind, resourceful, and has provided me with guidance. She is a beast in our industry, and is someone I will always look up to and admire. Nina Hayes, who is a business mentor for professionals internationally, has taught me that showing up as your ideal self can not only help you attract a life of abundance, but can help you provide a luxury experience to your clients. and lastly, my mentor Joelle Lee, who has shaped me tremendously as a professional, and has taught me so much about skin of color, but also the aesthetics business.
