We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexandria Richbourg and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexandria, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
I don’t think you truly ever know if you should keep going or to give up. However, I think it’s never okay to give up.

Sometimes you’ll be on one path and it’s not working out. Then you’ll have to readjust your plan or simply wait for what’s next. If that’s the case, allow yourself to get comfortable with being uncomfortable and take the steps you need to take to get back on track.

There are times where I feel that I need to rest, so I’ll do that and pick up where I left off later. There are also many times where I feel like, “This is tough,” or, “Am I doing the right thing?” but I continue to have faith and follow my dream. When things start to get harder, that’s when you know you’re doing something right.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What I’m most proud of in my creative journey is the progress that I’ve made over the years. I was the girl in high school who’d see other kid’s work and say, “WOW! I wish I could do that,” and now I am, if not better than what I used to see. Every time I put pencil to paper, there’s another opportunity for me to express myself, whether it’s writing a song or capturing the essence of a person and I really enjoy that.

I love to draw portraits. Every time I do, it makes me feel like I’m closer to them in some way. I think that’s what also separates me from others. I truly put my heart into every piece that I do. That’s partly why I take so long to do them but, I’m okay with that.

I got where I am today by simply not giving up. I don’t think there’s a time where I’ve felt like, “I know exactly how to do this,” because I’m always learning. So even when I don’t know what I’m doing, I make it a priority to hold myself accountable. Having talent is one thing, but having the drive to continue sets me apart.

It has not been easy at all. I’m just getting started so the growing pains have been real. I’ve learned to take one day at a time and I do my best to practice being in the moment. Accepting the challenges has helped me overcome them.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting the area and I wanted to show them the best time ever, as soon as they arrive, I’m taking them to eat. I’d tell them to try a burger from Slutty Vegan on Edgewood or get a rice plate from Mr. Everything on M.L.K. Jr. Drive.

We’d see an exhibit at the High Museum of Art and get coffee or espresso Martini’s at Cafe Intermezzo.

I’d spend a day with them enjoying the beautiful Atlanta weather, walking or riding scooters on the beltline.

We’d explore and shop at Ponce City Market, get tacos at Minero or make it a night occasion and go to The Roof for the view and enjoy drinks and food at 9 Mile Station (love, love, love their muscles).

I’d take them thrifting at Rag-O-Rama at Little 5 Points and check out the art vendors that sell their work.

I’d also make sure to check out what’s going on during the week online and see what local musicians or artists are doing (Most likely, someone is hosting something and promoting it on Instagram).

I’m definitely leaving a lot of things that I like to do out but this is where we’d start. You can always meet fun, exciting and interesting people all over the city. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to personally shout-out my family! They are my “why.” Every day I see them grow and overtime it has inspired me to continue to grow as well.

Many of my family members have faced challenges and they always rise above them. They encourage me, they protect me, they always have my back no matter what it is I’m going through or if I’m going after a new endeavor.

My success is a reflection of the love that helped me grow and for me, that began at home. So, I want to give this shout-out to my tribe!
