We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexandria Alstork and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexandria, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Being from Little Rock, Arkansas, and moving to the southside of Chicago, I wanted to bring some nostalgia to people who missed that love and comfort from Grandmother’s kitchen. I worked in corporate as a Clinical Analyst and was not fulfilled in my work even though I felt that I was successful in my career, It suddenly became hard for me to work in the IT field. I wanted to empower women like myself to take a leap of faith by being able to do what they love. Neither owning a business or working in a corporate setting is easy, but owning and putting in the hard work for me is so much more rewarding.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Currently, Buttercup Cake is a startup business that was created last year 2021. We are a black woman-owned business that specializes in moist pound cakes. What makes Buttercup Cakes different from the rest is that we make pound cakes very small to fit in the palm of your hand for catering events, to your normal size cakes for special occasions such as holidays. ButterCup Cakes is striving to be in everyone’s home across the U.S.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
well, hopefully, they will come in the summer only because winters are brutal in Chicago. If she comes in June I would take her to Hyde Park summer fest to hear great music and eat great food. She will definitely need to get an Italian beef from Portillo’s double-dipped with a sprite to quench her thirst, lol.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My Grandmother, Hazel D. Hicks, her love for food and the feeling of her presence. The comfort of her brought me so much joy and love that I can still feel when I eat one of ButterCup cakes.
