We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexander Gentry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexander, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Success is a personal definition and to me it means always picking myself up from failures. Every past mistake, every failed attempt, or bad outcome has given me more wisdom to carry on ahead. I also believe that you have be conscious in learning from these mistakes and flexible enough to navigate change to instill your gained knowledge. The interior design industry is tough and being resilient is a key component to succeeding.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business, Amulet Atelier Interior Design Studio, is a high end residential design firm. I always knew that I wanted to start my own firm and be my own boss. I have loved the business side while working for other companies and I knew if I had full creative control, I could succeed. I think what sets us apart from other firms is that we tailor each project directly to the client. A lot of design firms are well oiled machines and simply do not stray away from what is comfortable to them. I look for challenges, ways to grow, and push ourselves to the limit with new design ideas. A new project with new requirements feels like a puzzle that you have to piece together to make whole. It has not always been easy, but what I have found is that if you lead with honesty, transparency, and an open mind, you will get to the finish line. Our mission is to create an environment where our clients feel seen and heard as they live in a beautiful space that functions for them each day.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As an Atlanta native, I have a plethora of ATL favorites. However, if I have a friend coming into town, I love to start our adventures close to home in Buckhead. We would go and get breakfast at Buckhead Bread Company or brunch at Le Bilboquet. Then shop through Buckhead Village, while taking extra time at the gorgeous Bella Cucina. We would spend our afternoons in Chastain Park enjoying the beautiful Atlanta weather and cool down with a delicious cocktail from The Chastain. Our evening would be composed of either rooftop pasta at Grana or the raw bar at The Optimist. No matter who comes to town, a staple attraction for me is The High Museum. I think art is an aspect of our culture that brings us together because everyone can find something that attracts them.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am very fortunate to come from loving parents who raised me to work hard, understand the value of a dollar, and instill a hunger in me to make a life of my own. My parents, Katie and George, pushed me to be the best I could be while also loving and accepting me for who I am. Coming out as gay to them was so hard because I never wanted to let them down. However, they have lifted me up and made me feel that what I bring to the table is important. It is the reason that I know I can achieve anything I put my mind to.
