We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexa Brooks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexa, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?

I really wanted to create a platform for curly/natural hair girls that wasn’t like any other brand/influencer that I had seen or heard of. I wanted it to be a community for women and even men to feel comfortable embracing their natural selves beginning with their curls! I grew up going to predominantly white schools, where I was constantly compared to every other african american girl who I was in school with. I always felt that my hair had to be straight and down my back to “fit in.” However, in reality; the best way to show off my “good hair” was to embrace my beautiful coils that I was blessed with! SoI wanted to use my experience to instill that attitude into our curlturistas, and our young girls;  especially in society today! Give them a place where they felt like they FIT IN!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

I am very easily motivated! I always want to be successful when it comes to any jobs or projects that I begin. I am my own worst critic; however I use that to push myself to be better! Although I do have other side ventures to bring in some passive income; I do also work a full time job. I am currently a new hire trainer for Home Depot. This is the first corporate job that I can actually say that I love! When I graduated college, I thought for sure that I would be using my degree to become an elementary school teacher, as that is what my degree is in. However, God had a different plan for me and I am able to use my degree to train people from all over the United States. Essentially, I am still teaching just in a different way, and I wouldn’t have it any other way! It was not easy to get to this place, as I was in the school system for 3 years and never received a certified teaching job offer. When you expect or plan, for your life to go a certain way and it doesn’t; it can really feel defeating; but God always has a better plan!

It has been super challenging finding time to work a full time job and take care of work on my side hustles as well; but its been so worth it! You have to FIND time if you want to build an empire. The biggest challenge I think is being okay with the success not happening over night. It does take GREAT deal of patience to be an entrepreneur, but i know the end result will reflect all of the hard work and money that his been put into it! Especially, when your “why” is so personal and meaningful to you; it keeps you going!

I want people to know DON’T STOP! It is possible to do it all; to create the life that you want for yourself, stay on the path that is taking you through this amazing journey; and dont stop when you hit your goal KEEP GOING!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

We would definitely go to a lit brunch in the city on Saturday or Sunday. That is always a great time; and something Atlanta is known for! I would also probably plan a happy hour lunch outing and even a picnic in one of our awesome parks! Other than that, I would let my friend choose where they want to go seeing as though they are not from here, as a tourist. I would also love to go wine tasting at Chateau Elan.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

I would like to thank my Mom and Dad first and for most for blessing me with these awesome curls! Both of my parents had curly hair; so thank God for genetics. I also would like to thank my Mom for not putting a perm in my hair because it was “hard to handle.” She stuck with me until about 8th grade when i could be responsible for doing my own hair. She treated it with care and always reminded me how beautiful my curls were, and always would ask me to wear my hair in a curly bun because it was just so sleek, natural, and pretty. However, I was too caught up in my appearance to hear that. It wasn’t until I got older that I finally understood and realized that my curls were something that I should embrace and enjoy; because not everyone can! I can’t wait to instill that in my daughter in the future; and show her how beautiful she is with her natural hair!
