We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Nguyen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Success, in my opinion, is being able to help as many people as I can. My purpose is to help as many injured clients as I can by leveling the playing field between each of our client and the Goliath insurance company each is dealing with. This purpose is my north star. This is what springs me out of bed every morning. This purpose spawn habits such as the daily focusers, time boxing and time tracking. Without fails, every morning, I set out to achieve 6 large tasks (task that takes at least 45 minutes but not more than 90 minutes) by writing it down on my daily focuser. If a goal needs more than 90 minutes then I would time boxed in my calendar of the several large tasks for when I would do them. While accomplishing these daily large tasks, I would keep track of how long each task takes so that when facing similar tasks in the future, I would have a good idea of how long I need to time boxed it on my calendar. Time is the only resource that is scared. Once an hour is passed, you can never get it back. By doing my daily focuser, time boxing and time tracking, this is how I honor each hour at work.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I want to share with you a short story about my family and their journey to America. It was the summer of my junior year in high school, the year was 1991. I joined my father for the summer at this factory called Auto Vent Shade. They made metal shades for cars so people can crack their windows while driving in the rain. My first day with my father at the factor, I was assigned as the polisher on the assembly line. My job was to polish the metal shade with alcohol to remove all smudges from the prior workers. I was getting a minimum wage of $4.25 per hour. There was a red button to stop the line if you get behind: everybody knows NOT to press this button. Oh yes, I pressed it my first 2 minutes of the job. I felt the shame of stopping the entire line and quickly learned to man up and do my job. Eventually, I got the hang of it and saw the reality of what my parents went through everyday to keep us a float. My life back in Vietnam was way more luxurious. My family owned several pharmacies but now my family had to work 40 hours or more to keep food on the table. My siblings saw the sacrifices my parents made to give us a better opportunity in the U.S. That was their dream, to allow their children to have a better life.
I, too, have a DREAM. My dream is to help as many people as I can. It starts with my colleagues in the legal profession. I want to change how legal professionals are treated by law firms. Currently, at a typical law firm there are 3 classes of legal professionals, the non-lawyers, lawyers, and the owners. Non-lawyers and even lawyers may work at their firm for their whole life but are not treated the same as the owners. I want to change this. I want to make sure every employee has a share in the company. My mission is being able to sell stocks in this firm so that all employees have a say in the company. I can only go so far in this dream, this is why I want to promote a business that values family and team work.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love nature! Everything will follow the rule of nature. For example, the rule of focus in business can be traced back to the rule of nature. Look at light and water under extreme concentrating: it can cut steel and diamond. My favorite thing to do with friends is to hang out in nature: it relaxes me and help me and my friends bond.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Imagine a family of 5 at your front door and asked if they can stay at your house. Essentially, that was what my parents did to the United States in 1984 and America happily opened the door and let us into their house. I am eternally grateful for that kindness. I am also eternally grateful to my parents for making the sacrifice and taking the chance to move our family here to America. On the same breath, I am grateful to my wife Rebecca who also owns her own law firm for all the support and faith in me. Last but not least, my entire team at 770GOODLAW, without them, this firm would not be where it is today: together we are able to go further.
