We had the good fortune of connecting with Alethia McGuire and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alethia, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think about risk as the biggest decisions you make in your life. Without risk there can be no gain because there’s always a chance that you’ll win. When you don’t take risks then you’ll never win. There’s just no room for that. Risk has taken a big role in my life and career being a previously single, still independent young woman who takes care of my responsibilities on my own and who has fell on hard times like many. I’ve had to take risks in order make my business what it is today and what it has been for me when I was unemployed and trying to stay afloat. Things worked out for me and I’m being grateful and blessed.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
By day I’m a full-time health provider. I’m a Care manager for the developmentally disabled under OPWDD. This was a field I never saw myself working in but fell in love with doing what I do. Started off as a DSP and now care manager. On my off time I conduct my ice cream business by accepting weakly orders, making them and preparing for delivery or pick up or I’m preparing for an event. A blessing that landed in my lap I say. It took one recipe I stumbled across to something I loved creating. It was easy. Along the way I’ve learned to not let anyone tell you how to run your business, invest in your business, and never get discouraged because for every family or friend that doesn’t or stops supporting, remember there’s a world of strangers that willing to. Lee’s Ice Creamery sets apart from all the other ice cream businesses because it’s like love at first taste. It makes non ice cream eaters become addicted while serving dairy and non dairy goodies.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d take them for some food and drinks at maybe Ben’s Crab or Bareburger in Long Island. We’d go to a couple museums in NYC and then hit up break bar for some late night debauchery. We’d cook yummy breakfast in the AMs and maybe go to a brunch or 2. Family and friend hangouts for a social night are always a thing where we play phase 10, watch a movie, chat and have laughs. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give recognition honestly to everyone that has every supported me. All my day ones that consistently supported will always be dear to me. All the strangers that became lifelong fans of my product. Friends and Family that booked me for events, showed up for my pop ups shouted me out with promos post of social media. Y’all some real ones. ❤
