We had the good fortune of connecting with Alberto “YoManAlberto” Chavez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alberto “YoManAlberto”, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Since I was a kid, making money has been a constant goal. I knew from a young age what money could do for yourself and your family, and that was something I wanted to achieve in the moments now, and moments to come. Being in love with sneakers and fashion wasn’t cheap either and something I had to provide on my own, so working was always a must for myself.
As I continued to go through high school, I was introduced to more business focused classes and clubs where I would have opportunities to learn, network, and grow as a leader which led me into college with a positive attitude towards business, while also giving me an advantage in knowledge. All during this time, working on side hustles and jobs (both, never just one).
Throughout those years I was developing smaller projects and products, while learning exactly what I wanted to do, either work corporate or work for myself, and with the advancement of the internet, I could see from a younger age that the internet itself is very profitable. I decided to work on the path of both incase one failed and I wanted to find myself secure no matter which route I went.
I created my YouTube channel when I was in middle school but never had the courage to post until my senior year of high school. I since have continued this journey while growing my passion as a photographer and now having video skills that I have translated into different business opportunities. I have learned other skills in-between such as sewing which I use and plan to use in future projects.
I have seen growth in myself and the community and can see possibilities everywhere which has influenced me to continue this journey of starting and continuing my own business and future businesses, as hard work has shown a lot of these things are possible. I have always worked for myself, why not keep working for myself while being creative? It seemed like that question answered itself.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a multi-creative artist, I have been able to look at many challenges and turn them into passions. I love being knowledgeable in different forms of art, like a jack of all trades, master of none type of guy!
What I currently make are fashion videos, music videos, photos, leather goods (card holders, cases, etc.), and hand-made sneakers just to name several.
The thing about myself is that I recognize art in so many different ways, and I can see how I can apply it to my situations. I have built a motorcycle, a editing pc, and currently am working on restoring a car and learning to oil paint; all without prior skill, simply hard work and the internet by my side. I take all my own photos & videos, and edit them as well. One man crew but the skills of a 4 man crew.
I choose to look at skill and crave it, so I will learn it as I know freedom of creativity lurks behind those skills once they are acquired.
The journey I have made as a creative hasn’t been easy, there has been moments where I have wanted to give up because I didn’t see the results or wasn’t happy with the content but others would remain by my side, impressed with the work I was doing. I had to realize that I was my own worst-critic and that I shouldn’t beat myself up on my art if it wasn’t exactly what I envisioned. I knew more chances would come up and I would get better at the craft and could apply for future situations and better results. Keep pushing.
I want the world to know about YoManAlberto as a hard worker who has seen this vision and potential in himself since the very beginning. I pride myself on taking on new challenges and seeing how I can better myself & my art. I want the world to know, goals can be achieved, they may take longer than you want but keep focusing on it and truly avoid all distractions weighing you and your potential down.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Only recently moving to Portland I have been able to try a wide-range of restaurants and local vendors which has given me a chance to try new things and explore the city itself!
I would start our week off by enjoying a nice breakfast at Cheryl’s on 12th, where after we would most likely stroll around Downtown. Later during the day calls for an activity such as going to the AMC to watch a film, going to the dog park, or getting together with some friends and having dinner at the local food carts such as Hawthorne Asylum on Madison St.
Throughout the week you see a common theme of local food, local bars, local activities (if any go on such a vintage markets, clothing, and food markets), and even going out to shop at local shops or the thrift! Most of the time I like trying new places without much thought and see where life takes me.
Depending on the time of year, the basketball season is so much fun. The Trailblazers are always showing a good game and the sense of community is awesome. Sneaker week in the summer time is another example of a interesting time with exciting people as it is a week long event. Trying new is always my go to but as the city still hasn’t opened up completely, there are many more places for me to discover in the city.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This journey has been backed up by family and friends as they have seen the hard work and dedication that is put in towards this. They deserve plenty of credit as they keep me motivated and remind me of my growth. I will say music as well, has continued to keep me strong and occupied as I face new challenges.
