We had the good fortune of connecting with Akilyah Carpenter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Akilyah, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I can genuinely say I didn’t have a real thought process originally. It wasn’t in my plans to own a business, let alone a business focusing on resumes and cover letters. When I realized that I was meant to follow this path, I immediately started working on budgeting, figuring out how to manage my time between my primary job and jump starting my business and practicing my craft before promoting the service. It all moved so fast and took life of its own eventually, it’s crazy lol.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
My name is Akilyah Carpenter and I’m the owner of Asha’s Ascending Acts of Service LLC. I currently operate a business that focuses on resume and cover letter writing. I’ve also recently began to offer personal assistant and content management for local content creator and entertainment businesses. What sets me apart from other business owners in my particular field and the reason for my drive and determination. My foundation was grown from curiosity of how I, as a black woman and a former foster kid, could help kick down doors that was created to block me and others like me from the life of possibilities. My journey initially started with me helping close friends write out their own resumes and explaining to them the importance of resumes and cover letters. I would get excited learning how to hype my friends up through their work experience and i was even more excited showing my friends that they’re just as great as any other candidate interested in the role. Somehow, it got around town that my resumes were effective and I became “the girl who does resumes” lol. Adapting to the role of a resume writer wasn’t necessarily hard, but the time management? The project management? Learning how to communicate with different type of people? I was definitely stressed and stress was me lol but it worked out. I’ve learned that patience and being open to criticism is key to growth. I’ve learned that it’s okay to make mistakes as long as I’m just as considerate to correct them and learn. Ive learned so much but those 2 lessons have carried me so far. And what I’d love for the world to know about me and my brand is that my brand is very genuine. My goal is to show the world that “no” isn’t accepting in a world of chances and opportunities. I’m here to help, learn and grow along with providing the necessary steps and resources to help others do the same.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ve recently moved back to my hometown and have allowed myself to re-discover home. So if my best friend was to come into town to visit, I’d start off by taking her to the Jazz Festival that we have in Broad Ripple here in Indianapolis. I’d take her to WEI for Ramen or to a local black owned restaurant that’s grown since we left the city back in 2020. I would take her to my favorite bar called English Ivy’s for tacos and tequila and end the day with grabbing some delicious vodka made by my friend called Phases by Fazle! The experience would be amazing and refreshing from what we remember from growing up here.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d love to dedicate this feature to my friends who’ve became family and to those who have taken me into their hearts and homes when I needed love and stability the most. I’m grateful to all of my internal and external support from my best friends to my social media followers. And I’m grateful to you all at Voyage for offering me the opportunity to share my story!
