We had the good fortune of connecting with Ajee Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ajee, looking back, what do you think was the most difficult decision you’ve had to make?
The most difficult decision I’ve ever had to make, so far, was choosing to play professionally overseas. The decision was hard due to a recent injury I had just experienced playing basketball and my dream of beginning my career in the law field. Playing professionally is usually always a young athlete’s dream, but this opportunity came so fast, that I had not planned to play this sport for the next 5-10 years upon graduating. My decision stemmed from my personal health, importance of family, and my life’s long-term goals, Even as of today, I would make the same decision I made a couple of years ago.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Being new to the basketball community is not easy at all. We’ve had to create our business very strategically in order to stand out and be unique. Queens of the Court hosts exposure camps in different states, but not only do we bring in college coaches to watch the competition, but we also bring in multiple individuals that can plant helpful information into these young athletes. Whether it be professional players, representatives from the NCAA or sport brands. We have learned along the way that sometimes you have to build connections with people face-to-face in order to gain a clientele, and even though there may be similar companies or brands around that are doing the same things, stay focused on your own success. We want the world to know that we are not only cheering for the girls on the court, but we take pride in instilling confidence and yearn for success for the girls off the court as well.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ve been a resident of Georgia for a little over 4 years now, and I can say that Atlanta’s eateries are to die for. Thumbs Up diner is the go to when I have company visiting. Kelz Kitchen will give you over and beyond satisfying portions of food, and delicious taste. If I’m ever feeling down south cooking, this is the place I go. Piedmont park is beautiful and a great place to enjoy a couple’s or friends picnic. Of course there are countless amounts of lounges and clubs to attend, but my favorite by-far would have to be Boogalou. Great music, cute swinging chairs at the bar, and delicious foods! If I wanted to invite a couple of friends or family members out for a good time of bowling, Painted Pin is the place to go! Very much of an older crowd, but enjoyable with great drinks and food as well!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I was pushed to step back in the sports industry by my current fiance, Mauricio Inniss. He knew how much I loved the game, but he also knew how great I was with teaching it. In the beginning, I had no idea where to start, which is why this part of the shout out goes to my oldest sister Jaquese Smith, better known as JQ. She helped me with different ideas to market myself as a trainer and to become more involved with the basketball community. She has countless of resources and people she networks with that are amazing and helpful. I always told myself that if I were to go into business, I would need to work alongside someone I trust. This part of the shout out goes to Jasmine Borders, my business partner for Queens of the Court and best friend. My family has supported me in every aspect of my business. Everyone on this Earth has a purpose, and I want to shout out God for revealing what mine truly is.
