We had the good fortune of connecting with Adriana Foster and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Adriana, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My journey into entrepreneurship began with a desire for greater flexibility in my schedule. Working as a 1099 contractor initially allowed me to break away from the constraints of a traditional Monday-to-Friday, 9-to-5 schedule. I realized that I was missing out on simple joys, like spending time with family or even having the freedom to take care of personal errands, such as getting my hair done. This prompted me to seek alternative avenues within my occupational therapy (OT) profession.

I yearned to explore untraditional settings in my OT practice, which required dedicated time for planning and strategizing. However, I soon recognized the importance of separating my personal and business finances, especially when it came to taxes. This led me to establish my therapy business, ‘Fostering HOPE Therapy,’ under the legal structure of an LLC.

Navigating the complex realm of taxes was initially daunting for me, and I realized the need for education and expertise in this area. Consequently, I seized the opportunity to join an academy sponsored by a tax software company. Through this immersive learning experience, my understanding of taxes deepened, and I discovered a newfound passion. It was from this point that ‘Fostering HOPE Financial’ was born.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My professional journey has been driven by a passion for helping others and a commitment to providing exceptional service, whether in therapy or tax services. In both realms, my focus has always been on what’s best for each of my clients, prioritizing their needs and experiences above all else.

As a pediatric occupational therapist, I take immense pride in guiding my patients toward achieving their developmental goals. It’s not just about the therapy sessions; it’s about empowering them to navigate life’s challenges and reach their full potential. Seeing their progress and witnessing their achievements is incredibly rewarding and fuels my dedication to this field.

Similarly, in my tax business, I aim to simplify the tax process for my clients, ensuring they understand their tax situation and empowering them to make informed decisions. It’s about more than just crunching numbers; it’s about providing guidance and support to help clients navigate the complexities of the tax system and plan for their financial future.

What sets me apart is my unwavering commitment to my clients’ well-being and success. It’s not about the money; it’s about the experience and the impact I can make in their lives. I am proud of the personalized approach I take in both therapy and tax services, tailoring my services to meet the unique needs of each individual client.

My journey to where I am today has been filled with challenges and obstacles. Learning the ins and outs of starting a business was no easy feat, but with the support of resources like the Small Business Administration and guidance from mentors, I navigated through the process one step at a time.

One of the biggest challenges has been expanding my tax business, particularly as a therapist with no background in financial management. However, I’ve learned to leverage my strengths and seek out opportunities for growth. Similarly, expanding into untraditional therapy settings outside of the medical model has presented its own set of challenges, but I remain dedicated to advocating for the importance of occupational therapy in diverse communities.

Ultimately, I want the world to know that occupational therapy is a powerful tool for promoting health and well-being, especially among marginalized populations. OT can provide invaluable support in areas such as life skills assistance, goal planning, and housing stability, empowering individuals to build a brighter future.

I am excited about the journey ahead, both personally and through my businesses. Each day brings new opportunities for growth and learning, and I am eager to see my businesses thrive and make a positive impact in the lives of others.

Day 1: Begin the trip with a delectable Sunday brunch at one of Atlanta’s charming cafes or restaurants. After brunch, prepare your cooler and grab your lawn chair, then venture to Piedmont Park for a leisurely stroll. You might even stumble upon live music or a festival happening in the area.

Day 2-4: Embark on an adventure by hopping in the car and driving to a restaurant you’ve never heard of, supporting a small business while indulging in culinary delights. Dive into Atlanta’s rich cultural tapestry by immersing yourself in its attractions and history museums.

Day 5-6: For a taste of Atlanta’s nightlife, head to some of the city’s trendy lounges and rooftop bars. Whether you’re in the mood for craft cocktails, live music, or a cozy atmosphere, there’s something for everyone.

Indulge in pampering treatments at the spa and then sample some of Georgia’s finest wines while enjoying the beautiful surroundings of the vineyard. Overall, what I love most about Atlanta is the diversity of experiences it offers. Whether you’re looking for a fun day out with friends, a romantic date night, or a quiet evening of relaxation, there’s always something new and exciting to discover. From delicious food to cultural attractions to vibrant nightlife, Atlanta truly has it all!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Over time, I’ve leveraged the foundation set by mentors and cultivated relationships forged through various avenues, including leadership roles through organizations, active participation in church activities, and my involvement in my sorority. These diverse spaces have played a pivotal role in shaping who I am today, allowing me to thrive and grow into the individual I am proud to be.

I owe a significant debt of gratitude to my parents, who have been unwavering pillars of support throughout my entrepreneurial journey. Their unwavering belief in my abilities and their encouragement to pursue my dreams, even in the face of uncertainty, have been invaluable.

Transitioning from a stable salary to the unpredictability of contracting was a daunting leap for me. I grappled with the fear of the unknown, unsure if I would have business the next day. However, my parents provided me with the reassurance and comfort I needed to navigate this transition with confidence.

Their constant encouragement and belief in my capabilities gave me the courage to step outside my comfort zone and pursue my entrepreneurial aspirations. They instilled in me the belief that I could achieve anything I set my mind to and that, no matter the challenges I encountered, everything would ultimately be okay.
