We had the good fortune of connecting with Adrian Dalsus and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Adrian, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
When you start a business or dedicate yourself to being a Creator, suddenly you start hearing this word all the time.

Deep down, you know that giving up your 9-5 job to dedicate yourself to developing your own brand is a risk.

But it’s not until you make the decision that you understand what this means:

There is no room for failure, you have to make things right.

My first takeaway from this is that you need to create a space of safety within your own risk.

If I had decided to focus from the beginning on a market niche as specific as independent Spanish-speaking musicians, I might have failed enormously by not being profitable in the first few months.

Instead, I first created my own marketing agency, specializing in lead generation. It’s the clients from my agency that have allowed me to pay the bills and have time to develop other ideas.

Until now, all the work I have dedicated to music marketing, the “Querido Músico” Podcast, my book and the “Despegue Musical” Academy has been for the love of art.

There is a risk that as much as I love all of this, it might not end up being a scalable business (or maybe it will). We’ll see.

This is the importance of creating projects that you REALLY love with all your being.

Regardless of the risk, you work passionately and I think this is what can make all the difference.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Since I was a child I always wanted to dedicate myself to music, but like many others, I ended up studying a “safe” career.

For better or worse, this allowed me to discover my second great passion: marketing.

That is how, after +10 years working in advertising with +120 brands, I decided to share everything I learned with my people: independent musicians.

Since then, I have created a Podcast, written a Book, share daily content on social networks and my YouTube channel, and founded a Music Promotion Academy.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Since I moved to Mexico in 2016, I have fallen in love with this country and this city: Guadalajara.

To all those who want to visit, I would take them to the magical town of Tlaquepaque, the city of Tequila and the center of Guadalajara to try “tortas ahogadas”, barbacoa tacos and “carne en su jugo”, while listening to some authentic mariachi’s.

As there are always a variety of concerts throughout the year, I would attend one with friends. And after, some taquitos, again.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
At a professional level, I thank all those who trusted me to work with them leading teams in advertising agencies with big brands.

I firmly believe that it’s experience (with both good and bad things) that makes you grow as a professional (not necessarily a degree, master’s or doctorate).

On a personal level, I have to thank my girlfriend Odelis. There are people who are capable of bringing out the best in you and she is one of them. Her support, advice and opinion has been key to dream big and keep going. Everything I’ve done has been practically a team effort.
