We had the good fortune of connecting with Abigail Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Abigail, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Risk taking has always made me nervous. However, I am a person that is very big on you never know unless you try and work hard for it. Growth isn’t supposed to be comfortable and by taking risks myself and putting myself and my business out there I have created a life for myself that I am proud to own, and I also get to channel my creative side for it. By creating this business and taking the risks by doing so, I have learned to trust my vision and work HARD for what I have.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My whole life of working since I was able to, restaurant and server life was all I knew. I mean I always loved fashion and clothing, but I didn’t know I would ever have a career in it.
I didn’t know until I was in my senior year of college what I wanted to do with my life, that is until I started working at a clothing store. I quickly felt like this is where I belong but still didn’t love the idea of not being able to do what I wanted with buying the clothing and being as creative as I was. I knew then I wanted my own store one day and I wanted to be a business owner.
I graduated with a degree for literally no reason in psychology and business, moved home, went back to my college summer serving job and started saving for my business. I began building my company out of my childhood bedroom in my parents house, 7 months later I launched The Vintage Thread and had a launch party with my closest friends and family.
Fast forward about a year, we signed a lease to an old bike shop and turned it into my dream storefront. Well I thought so. That storefront was a dream to create in and host in, but the foot traffic to support my dreams just weren’t the same and it wasn’t working. Location is everything, you always hear that, but it’s something someone stubborn like me has to learn the hard way.
I stumbled across the perfect corner spot of downtown Macon, Ga, called the number on the door, broke my lease, signed the new one, and quickly began moving and planning.
Now I am happily located in the spot of my dreams in downtown Macon, Ga on the perfect little corner spot and my dream is slowly becoming a reality. I still serve tables full time to pay my regular bills, but my business is slowly supporting itself and my goal for it is to be able to support me too.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When my friends visit, I love to take them for a shopping day and then grab some dinner in downtown Macon, and then go get some fun cocktails from Quill cocktail bar or The Rose Room for a night cap espresso martini!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family and Fiance are my biggest supporters through all of my journey. My fiance has been to just about every single pop up or event that I have had within my career, he is always there to remind me when I get down “Abigail, if it was easy everyone would do it”. And to this day, that saying sticks with me on my hard business owner days.
