We had the good fortune of connecting with Aaron Renfroe and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Aaron, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I fell into the business because the hobby became too expensive. In order to grow, I had to learn the business side: taxes, deductibles, how to pay my contractors, etc. Once that ball started rolling, I knew that it had to continue if I was going to be able to expand the brand. It’s been natural growth sense then, though at first it was quite difficult.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The hardest thing about our ‘art’ was realizing that our personal vision of art, no matter how special it made us feel, didn’t matter. What mattered, at the end of the day, was how profitable our work was to ourselves and to the models we work with. Art won’t put food on the table. Art can feed the soul, however. Learning how to create artistic content got us a long way, and still helps keep photography fun when the business details can bog things down.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This really isn’t applicable these days. When we fly someone in, we take them to the work site and visit as few places as possible.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The models we work with deserve all the credit. Building a network of people, particularly in troubled times, takes a lot of work, effort, and trust. Without models willing to give their time and effort, we wouldn’t exist as a brand.
