We had the good fortune of connecting with Brian Kelly and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brian, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
From a very young age I never was fit to comply with institutions. The boundaries and limits only increased my desire to break down the walls, With being confined in school and work environments with strick guidlines, codes and regulations only made things harder for me. As a creative, emotional and passionate person I felt suffocated and drained by regular rigid tasks and check ins. Developing my own career path was what truly excited me. The challenges, lessons, failures and victories laid on my shoulders, Without the ability to cast blame only focuses your attention onto the person you need to become. The education and tools needed to achieve your journey and the creative resources available. What I originally set out to do 16 years ago was to find freedom and independence but what truly drives me today is the adventure and the journey that it continues to grow, Finding my self in an entirely different career now as a Captain and Fishing Guide in the Northeast was where I find myself today. A place I would never would have imagined but without pushing yourself you never know where you will end up.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I feel that I only have my foot in the door in my new journey of being a Captain and Fishing Guide. Entering this field in one of the most historic and legendary fisheries here on Cape Cod and the South Shore of Massachusetts. From Oysters, Scallops, Lobsters, Blue Fin Tuna, Striped Bass and so much more Massachusetts is one of the largest commercial fisheries in the world. As Charter Business’s with larger Vessels can accommodate your typical Fishing Charter up to 6 clients and harvesting the fish you catch. I set out to bring a style of fishing that has been popularized, developed and was originated in Florida. I am a Fly Fishing and Light Tackle guide where I take my clients for a Sport Fishing experience of Catch and Release. I focus on conservation and sustainable fisheries as well as educating anglers to make better use of their time on the water. Selling the experience of being in the most beautiful environment, the sounds, sights, friendships, laughter and all of the human emotions. Being a Captain and Fishing Guide is incredibly challenging our season here in the North East is only 6 months. Its an incredibly difficult area to navigate and to pattern the fish you are pursuing, Its a hunters mentality you need to know the migrations of the bait and game fish as well the weather, wind direction, locations on top of maintaining your Boat and Equipment in the most corrosive environment on the planet, Salt Water. If you do not love it you wont be able to do it, To be on the water is where I am at peace even with all the challenges it presents for business, life and relationships. The reward is unmeasurable.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Living in Americans Home Town of Plymouth Massachusetts its a beautiful town with the Harbor Waterfront Dining where you can always find somewhere with some live music. Having Long Beach just may be one of the prettiest walks in town, with Cape Cod Bays waves crashing on the beaches and the Back Bays just on the other side. With a short distance away is the Cape Cod Canal and an escape to all of Cape Cod. In my opinion the best way to see the South Shore and Cape Cod is via boat. You have fishing charters, lobster tours, whale watching, great white shark tours, endless Marinas to dock and get a local Lobster Roll, Clam Chowder or some good old fashioned fried seafood, The Islands are a cant miss Marthas Vineyard and Nantucket, You can take a Ferry from Falmouth or Hyannis for and Island Escape. Chatamn attracts shopping, resturants and the famous Chatamn Bars Inn. Yet the true treasures can be found in all the small Cape Cod towns in between. You haven’t been to Cape Cod until you’ve made it all the way to Provincetown. Ptown for short, you will find entertainment, resturants and shopping. Along with the National Seashore with its protected beaches from development endless sand dunes and pristine beaches, Race Point being a favorite.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Along my journey and story there are to many people to name, As my journey started in Animal Behavior specializing in Canines. I had some wonderful intrsuctors that truly changed my perspective in life and the Animal Behavior Field, Every client I interacted with taught me a lesson especially in failures as in success, From land lords for my businesses to lawyers or accountants truly shaped me and became my teachers. To know where I am from a time ago is hard to imagine. In a new field that I have always had passion for. The spring of 2018 I attend Sweet Water Travel Guide School in Montana. From lead instructor Bradley Kastner who was able to give me the light to pursue a career on the water. To Bears Den Fly Shop in Taunton Massachusetts where I interned and absorbed as much information from the equipment, flies, traditions and characters of the Sport. With my lead professor the Ocean and the Fisheries with the hours days and years to gain experience and lessons that the water will teach us.
