We had the good fortune of connecting with Korey Townsend and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Korey, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I’m inspired by stories. Our perceptions are often influenced by our experiences. With that being said, I feel we all can grow and learn from each other through stories. My experiences may differ from yours, but your story may be what helps me evolve as an individual.

The name VoicedTV was derived from people constantly being on their phones, which is basically use as a form of television now, and the hopes of inspiring people to use their the voice by sharing their stories. Dialogue is essential, but I feel there’s less dialogue/conversations occurring today. My art is inspired by stories and try to convey stories through my art.

The camera is simply a tool, but it’s a powerful tool that can capture our stories. With a camera our stories can be shared and continue to live even when we’re no longer here. That’s what inspires me.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When it comes to my brand, I want people to know it represents authenticity. I strive to deliver quality imagery, yet keep the rawness of the situation. My desire is for people to appreciate the visuals, but I want them to feel like they’re there.

For example, I have a scar under my left eye. When pictures are taken of me, I don’t try to hide it because that’s part of my story. I respect and appreciate all forms of art, but I enjoy creating raw and clean visuals.

I mentioned earlier that stories influence my art, so I hope to empower individuals to share their stories. Picking up the camera has caused me to view life differently and given me purpose.

Currently, I am focusing on cars and the stories that come from them. Cars are simply items that provide some sort of commonality amongst people & assist in an experience. For example, someone may love a particular car because their grandfather may have had one back in the day and that car brings back those memories they shared with their grandfather.

My uncle was that person for me. He loved classic muscle cars and his excitement for them was contagious. It definitely influenced me. He died by suicide some years back, so I wear a suicide prevention band on my wrist everyday. The band reads “my story isn’t over; SUICIDE PREVENTION.”

When I’m around people who are passionate about cars or tell stories surrounding cars I feel as though my uncle is with me. One of my goals is to put together an annual car show or cruise for suicide awareness. It’s about the car, but at the same time, it’s not. It’s about the person, but a car helps tell the story.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
That’s an interesting question because anyone who knows me personally would tell you I struggle with activity itineraries. I guess I would first ask them what activities are they in the mood for. After getting that feedback, I’d ask friends here for their suggestions and come up with a plan that way.

Here in Charlotte people like the Noda area, many of the locals who are actually from Charlotte hang out at places like Thomas Street Tavern & the Common Market. We’d checkout those areas, get some good food, hit up some of the local breweries or vineyards, depending on what they’re in the mood for.

I probably didn’t properly answer the question because as you can see I’m the wrong fit for ‘Activities Coordinator’.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Kevin ‘Surf’ Mitchell is a mentor of mine. He’s younger than I am, but he’s an accomplished photographer who has taken me under his wing.
