We had the good fortune of connecting with JENNIFER ANDERSON and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jennifer, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Initially, I had an online boutique. Although I loved it, I didn’t have the needed support. It was also a drain on my finances. So I decided to pivot. I love fashion and styling others, I just felt this was a natural transition.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started Style Me Chicly from a place of more. I’m a full time government employee; however, that is a job. I’m appreciative for what it has allow me to attain. But I love being a woman. I love clothes, makeup, hair. All the things that add to my woman-ness! As years pass by, I notice that women, especially younger black women have lost some of the style and grace that I grew up seeing. I want to showcase women at their physical best. I want women who are starting a business or have a business to exhibit what their brand is without having to tell the story right off. I love to aid in that. I love a women who is trying to find her place, who she is. I love to be able to assist them in figuring out their personal style.

I started styling professionally in 2021. I still feel like I’m finding my way. The current market I’m in doesn’t always lend itself for this industry. I know it’s possible. I know because I have examples like J. Bolin who’s from Mississippi as well. He is super successful. I watched him through the years work to get where he is today.

I have definitely learned that my customer will find me if I put in the work. So I stay encouraged and motivated because I know I can be successful even though there may be valleys. I stay true to my style esthetic. I’m not trying to be like anyone else.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Lol. One thing about me, I can plan a good time!!! My taste and interests are broad. Jackson Metro area has some of the best food around! One of my favorite happy hour spots is Saltine Restaurant. Their margarita is undefeated. I enjoy a good catfish plate, so Eddie & Ruby’s on Valley is the place to go for fish. If the visit is during football season, Jackson State football is what we’re doing and all of the tailgating and partying that goes along with that. We would definitely check out the Two Museums which features the Civil Rights Museum. Hopefully, a local spot has good band performing such as ISH. If it’s Friday night, I’m going to my favorite BYOB spot. I love live music, so anyplace we can partake of that is where I want to be.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mother deserves a great deal of credit. I was raised by a single mother with 4 children. Even though we didn’t have much, quality was always important, being put together well was important and loving one’s self was super important. She is a beautiful woman. She always exhibited so much style and confidence. I’ve always admired that about her.
