We had the good fortune of connecting with Jayce Hill and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jayce, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I wanted to escape the 9-5 grind and find a way to make a living and enjoy a little bit of freedom.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Video editing is a skill that applies to many industries and with that you are required to be flexible and do some research into each client to figure out what they need even when they may not know it themselves.
I think what separates me from the pack is my ability to be flexible. It’s easy to bury yourself in a niche and never move out of it, but I think my ability to walk into a project and be prepared for any issue is my greatest attribute.
This year I have worked for law firms, major sports companies, small businesses, fortune 500 companies, and helped a few of my friends with comedy sketches. All of these experiences help me look at any project from a different direction.
I was able to gain all these experiences by saying yes to every call when I first started. As much as this helped me out, it also taught me a lesson: get to the point where you can say no. I allowed myself to accept everything and go the extra mile for the clients but at the cost of my own time and mental wellbeing. I found that you have to strike that balance between saying yes to things that are interesting (or pay well) and with clients that will respect your skillset and time.
I hope that when a client works with me and my team that they are getting an honest and dependable service. We pride ourselves on bringing our creative eye to their project and they get to deal with real people that will help them build and not just execute. I hope that we have made that our brand!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh this is easy!
Friday night we are going to The Local and eating some wings with a pitcher of Classic City Lager we will then head to the rooftop at The Clermont Hotel and watch the sunset. At this point my friend got some great local (pun intended) food and gets to witness the best view of Atlanta.
Saturday during the day we’ll get brunch at El Tesoro. We will then head to Little 5 points to walk around and visit some weird little shops. If there is a show at Variety, we are going to watch that and if not find we’ll head to New Realm brewing and take some scooters on The Beltline.
Sunday we’ll hike Stone Mountain or Arabia Mountain, maybe see the sunrise if we took the previous night easy. There’s always some festival going on so maybe check that out or just hang out in EAV or Inman Park.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t have started my business without the support of my support group. If I were to specifically name a mentor of mine I’d say Jim Hicks. Before I worked under him at my previous position I was a bit rough around the edges in terms of communication. As silly as it sounds having someone teach you the ins and outs of how to send a proper email, how to present yourself properly and how to generally look like you have confidence in what you do makes the world of difference. I can’t thank him enough.
