We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaidah B and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jaidah, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I use to be such a workaholic. I mean from sun up to sun down, all I knew was design, design, design. I would literally hold my urine (sorry if TMI) until I perfect something I’m designing, because I’m such a perfectionist. I wouldn’t eat all day, nothing, until what Im working on was perfect in my eyes. Now Its like “I have 6 days until this due, lets binge watch a show this day, walk 4 miles the next”. Being a mom, balance is so important. I’ve now put myself on a schedule to design as much as I can with my children in school, because once they’re out I’m in Mommy mode, cooking, helping with homework, bath time and more. As a mom, You don’t want to look back and regret prioritizing a project over sacred time with your babies.

Please tell us more about your art. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Every one says the way I mockup my work or post attracts them, and I just sit here lost as to what that means because I browse through 50 pages of mock ups before I find the right one I want to utilize. Im most proud of designing for an Ice Creamery in Atlanta. Seeing everyone visit the location, eating out of packaging I designed is such a dope feeling,

It has not been easy. Having to establish boundaries wit my business. I’ve learned that just because Im good at accomplishing visions via email, there is still clients that need to convey their vision via phone.

I want to know there’s nothing wrong with asking questions, learning, being a student of the game years in, be always open to learn new techniques, research, etc.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m in the country so we would have to travel out of my county for fun. For good food, Im simple I would take them to The Bayou (NOLA Cousine), Yardhouse, if they like seafood like I Do, then of course a good place to get crazy with a boil. Im in the home of the theme parks, so if they’re a daredevil like me, we can visit one of those for the day and take it back to a good night out at Ember nightclub.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I feel like this is a Grammy speech, haha! First I want to Thank God. My Dad for always buying me the latest computer because he knew how bad I adored design as a child. I know he’s watching over me proudly. Next is Michael Johnson, taught me so much of design from Yahoo Messenger way back in the day. He used to get frustrated with me and told me “Teaching design over the computer is like teaching someone how to braid over the phone”. That line stuck with me. I hope he knows how appreciative I am of him for his guidance and patience. My love for investing in me and always letting me shine. Always willing to study what I do and help when needed, I want to thank my sons father for always willing to be my muse. My design colleagues without mention, ya’ll help me soar, make me show up every time. Each one of you are such an inspiration and I hope you know how amazing you all are! My clients over the last 18 years, I thank you all! Last but not least, my children, whom I deem my best designs outside of photoshop.
