How do you think about work-life balance?

By far the most common conversation we have with the folks we interview is about work-life balance. Starting a business or pursuing a creative career makes finding work life balance really tough because there is no clear start and end to one’s work day. My balance has definitely changed overtime as I have transitioned from being a full-time student, to graduating and pursuing theatre professionally! Before, it was easy to feel fully immersed in the arts through the community that I was a part of at Oglethorpe University, but now, I have to be more intentional about how I maintain a good balance between work and play, and how I distinguish the work that often feels like play. Work-life balance has evolved dramatically for me over the years.
I used to think of balance as a fixed goal, something I could “achieve” and maintain. But I’ve come to see it more as a rhythm that shifts depending on the season I’m in. As a retail store owner, stylist and someone deeply involved in philanthropic work, especially with organizations like the American Heart Association and the Junior League of Charleston there are weeks where the scales tip more toward service or business. Work life balance is extremely important to me. I have always found that when I am feeling more fulfilled with activities outside of work, I show up to work with more energy and passion for my job. A lot of adults start to lose their “extracurricular activities” once the stress of work starts to weigh them down. I’ve intentionally focused on keeping those extracurriculars as an integral part of my life and routine. As a lover of theatre, I have continued to participate in community theatre performances outside of my corporate job and lifestyle.
