Joi Miner | Author-Preneur (Author, Editor, Publisher, Performance Poet, Storyteller, Motivational Speaker)

While sitting at a lake, watching the ebb and flow of the water, a dear friend of mine, Yogi Dada, said to me, “Be obedient like the water.” This quote has stayed with me from that moment. I love water. It’s where I go when I need to clear my head and re-center. I take what we call in my house “Hollywood showers” where you stay in the water until it turns cold. Some say that this is because I’m a water sign, Scorpio (don’t judge a girl by her zodiac lol). For me, water has always been a place of peace for me. However, I wasn’t able to put words to the logic of my love for water until that moment… that conversation. Read more>>

Everything happens for a reason and trust in divine timing. The first quote has been a favorite since I was a child and I’ve always carried it with me along my path. I trust that all that happens is for the greater good and in divine timing. You’re never really late but right on time. Read more>>

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” This quote by Margaret Mead has guided me through the early phases of working as an entrepreneur. I was a one-woman-show and later a small team, but we were doing BIG things in the community around us. What started off as a copy writing services, later evolved into a specialized business plan writing firm, and now a consulting group for startups. Our commitment to helping the entrepreneurs around us realize their dreams brought us satisfaction. Still a small team, we are encapsulating Margaret Mead’s quote by using our thoughtfulness and commitment to serve upcoming entrepreneurs on their individual journeys to building their own legacies. My favorite quote is “be patient with your process.” I have always been hard on myself. We live in a time where you are expected to just get over things or rush to finish. I am learning to move at my own pace. When I was younger, I had a definite timeline for everything in my life. I no longer have the timeline. I don’t feel the need to rush to the finish line. My goals are not based on what others are doing around me. This quote means to slow down and really experience life. Read more>>

Krista Smith | Balloon Stylist

I think that it’s definitely a combination of two separate ones. The first one that I regularly say to myself is: “The world needs who you were made to be”. I actually saw it on a keychain while visiting the Magnolia Silos in Waco, TX a while back. Something about it just really resonated with me. I took that keychain back with me, and kept it on my keys to be a constant reminder that if you feel something deeply, and if you feel your purpose is to be with or in something- then it’s worth pursuing, regardless of other people’s opinions Read more>>

To whom much is given, much will be required. For me this quote simply encourages me in my toughest moments. Moments when I question whether or not I am on the right path/doing the right thing. I remember, to whom much is given, much will be required and I figure it is par for the course and I keep it pushing. I think far too often, people think comfort runs parallel to success. This is so far from the truth. The two are not linear. There will be hills and valleys along the way…steadfastness is the key. Endurance. The race is not given to the swift, but to the one who endures. Read more>>

“One should be afraid to die until they have made a difference in world” Horace Mann Bond. Since I was very young, I understood the transformative power of education for my family, especially my mother and myself. Realizing its power, I have, for the last 24 years, made it my personal mission to help college students, especially African-American men, succeed in college-ultimately completing their undergraduate degree and becoming outstanding men to their families and society. And, while I am pleased to have been able to help thousands of young men achieve their dreams, I am still working daily to help even more. Read more>>

LaShai Campbell | Executive Director & CEO

My favorite quote is “If a task is once begun, never leave until it’s done, be the task big or small, do it well or not at all.” I don’t know the original source of this quote but my paternal grandfather instilled it into our family and the quote continues to guide me in my decision making to this day. Although my late grandfather, Hosie Lee Joshua was born and raised on the remnants of a plantation in Mississippi in the late 1920s and only matriculated through the 6th grade, his tenacity and diligence pushed him to found his own cleaning company in the 1980s. His company supported his wife and 3 children and allowed him to own properties in California and Georgia in his lifetime. Read more>>

My favorite ” I do things that I don’t get paid on today, so I get paid on things I don’t do tomorrow” During moment of doubt I always repeat this quote as affirmation that things do take time. I need to remain grateful through all obstacles and helps me take a step back to the “3R’s” which means ” Rest, Recover and Reflect.” Don’t rush anything, you are where you need to be. Take a deep breath; analyze, understand, adjust and adapt. This quote is my favorite by far. Read more>>
