Meet Cameron Gallagher | Director + Filmmaker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Cameron Gallagher and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cameron, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I was about 13 or 14, I realized I wanted to be a director but had NO idea how to get there. During high school I started to realize that I could use Video (and photo) to make enough money to MAKE those films I wanted too, so I sort of fell into starting my business, but am so glad I did.
It really is all about funding the passion. I love the Walt Disney quote that “I don’t make films to make money, I make films to make money, to make more films” and I’ve lived by that.

What should our readers know about your business?
I’ve always been a movie lover, and as I got older and started producing commercials, corporate videos, and more…I’ve always felt the need to infuse as much human connection (heart, feelings, emotion) into everything we do. Just because something has traditionally been “boring” or “corporate” that doesn’t mean there isn’t a true deeper meaning somewhere, or some way that business/service hasn’t touched someone’s life, and telling that story is incredibly important.
From the Narrative films I’ve made, it’s been so rewarding to collaborate and work with so many incredible people over the years and really just watch myself grow just by proximity. Filmmaking is so collaborative, and I’ve been proud to be apart of that process with so many amazing people, especially my now Long-Time collaborators Zack Porlier & Jeremiah lewis.
Zack and I work together daily at Black Mountain Visuals, and each day we try to push new boundaries and are always seeing how we can create the BEST product, and it makes coming to work exciting. It’s not always easy trying to balance work and the “fun” but we’ve found ways to really keep each project exciting and feeling fresh. Jeremiah and I have been deep in the film development world since 2020 when we first met on SEVERAL projects, and its been incredibly exciting to turn new corners in a world that felt incredibly foreign just a few years ago.
Along the way, there has been TONS of lessons to be learn, but I feel it always comes back to mining every ounce of confidence you have in you (wether real or not) to step up, put yourself outside of what you know and feel comfortable in, and try something new. Film is all about exploration and I feel like it’s very hard to stop looking next to you, and always keep your eyes ahead. I hate calling myself an “Artist”, but I think most artists have trouble keeping their eyes on a prize, and not letting competition or the feeling of failure creep up.
In track, my coach used to always say “If you look sideways during a race…you’ve lost” and I feel like it’s the greatest advice I’ve ever gotten. Always look at your goal, and never the competition.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There is SO much art, culture, and FILM going on, it’s tough to narrow things down. I’m a film locations guy, so any chance I can to visit some film sets or locations…I’m in! I think anyone visiting or passing through NEEDS to check it out!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Of course I have to thank my family. My brother Grant in particular, who was always in my films as a kid, even thought he had much better things to be doing. I feel like if it wasn’t for him helping me along the way, it would have been easy to let it fall to just a hobby. My parents, although they may never understood what it was we were doing, just always giving feedback, being there, and letting us have fun was huge. They’ve always been first in line to see even the most AWFUL projects I’ve made!
I’d love to shoutout my girlfriend Allison and her family for being so supportive as well, and really trying hard to understand what a strange career it is, and always being uplifting!
Lastly, I have to give a shoutout Ryan Connolly and the Film Riot team. Ryan (and the crew) really are what inspired me as a young teenager to make this film dream a reality, and years later being able to meet & chat with Ryan often has just solidified him as a great mentor, and truly someone who’s looking out for young filmmakers, so I owe him so much!
