We had the good fortune of connecting with Jai Wright and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jai, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Ajae Beauty was birthed when I had my daughter and my experience with postpartum Psychosis. Post-Partum Psychosis only occurs in approximately 1 to 2 out of every 1,000 deliveries, or approximately .1-.2% of births. It’s a rare condition that is not talked about enough. As I was healing and going through the process of therapy, one of the techniques I learned was aromatherapy. Aromatherapy is the use of aromatic plant extracts and essential oils. I continued to use aromatherapy in my day to day life after postpartum. Since I’ve always had a love for skincare, I thought why not combine the two and I came out with my line of aromatherapy skincare products.
Ajae Beauty is not just a skincare line though, it’s a community for women, mothers, and anyone that has suffered or is suffering with mental health. It’s a space to find resources and have the uncomfortable conversations. It’s a a space where we make sure self-care and mental health remain a priority.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
While being and entrepreneur I’m also a business professional, by day I have a career in HR. I’ve been in the field for over a decade and I would say the biggest challenge was when the pandemic hit. I was out of work taking care of my daughter full-time, that is when my motivation to really get my business launched started. I never wanted to be in a space again where someone dictated how I was going to pay my bills. A major lesson I learned while launching was to always speak with your accountant first so you don’t waste a bunch of money. You also need to have balance, I make sure to have quiet time every morning to meditate, pray, and plan out my day also exercise.
What set’s me apart from others is that I know how to grind but I also know that you need to take care of yourself. I make sure to get my sleep and listen to my body when I need to slow down. I’m most proud about launching my business and sticking through it while being a mother, and working full-time, I’m also in school to become a skincare formulator.
I want the world to know that this brand has something for everyone, and its focus is to make sure everyone remembers their selfcare and mental health are a priority. Ajae Beauty will be working to bring more awareness to the lack of resources/preventative measures for people suffering with mental health especially in the black and brown communities.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would definitely have a couple of beach days in there because I love being by the water. Hearing the waves is so peaceful. We would do some historic and artsy things, Im learner so anywhere we can go that I can learn something new about history or art I’m there. I love to cook so some meals would be in plus my house is super cozy, but I would also take them to my favorite taco spot or the new restaurant in town. I’m a foodie so I’m always ready to try the new places. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This is dedicated to my daughter Alaina, she was apart of the inspiration for the business. She is my constant motivator to keep going. My fight was always to get back to her when I was going through postpartum. I always say she came to save me and she did, she woke me up to possibility. Becoming a mother to this special child, made me a better woman and this business will be hers one day.
