Meet Amber Gluckin: Photographer & Videographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Amber Gluckin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amber, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
To this day, the most important decision that I’ve made is to be myself in everything that I do. As a young woman, I’ve had to learn how to navigate through different environments, especially male dominated ones, and pretend to be what I thought others wanted me to be in order to obtain the recognition and respect that I felt was deserved. Having to wear so many masks and not being true to myself resulted in what others would call “success”, but at the cost of my own mental health. Often I’d have clients who didn’t value me or my expertise, and I accepted that because I felt that I had to, in order to move forward and please them. Once I realized that I didn’t have to be confined to that cycle, I broke it. I began to speak my mind, learn how to say no, and be confident in myself and my profession. That was the shift I needed to be able to be the best resource I can be for my clients. As far as success goes, how can you define it? I feel like I have so much more to work towards, and I’m excited for whatever this journey brings.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The primary focus of my business is Residential and Commercial photography and videography. I assist local realtors, property managers, new home builders, construction trades, and investors with the digital and print marketing of their assets through photos and video.

I think that the main thing that sets me apart from others is that whether I’m photographing a lacking property or a million dollar listing, I treat each with the same attention and care. I try to capture the ambiance in every space and highlight what I think will bring interest to it. That isn’t always easy!

Overall, there have been huge learning curves when it comes to understanding new software and tech. Like anything, the first few times you work with equipment can be really confusing and frustrating. If there is one thing that I’ve learned, it’s that having patience and knowing it will work out helps. YouTube is pretty handy too!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
North Carolina has access to gorgeous lakes, rivers, beaches and mountains all within a 2-4 hour drive of one another. A hike in Asheville would be amazing. The greenery and wildlife is something that everyone should experience. We’d probably spend some time in downtown Durham for the day. The culture there is amazing and so rich. I’m really big on nature and being outdoors. We’d probably spend the rest of the time in Wilmington or Emerald Isle at the beach. The beach is such a necessary break from the day to day. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are a few people who come to mind when thinking of how I got started and continue to learn from. Definitely my husband Daniel, who always encourages me to go after what I want and not letting the fear of failure stop me from obtaining my goals. He’s also kind of like my personal in house geek squad when tech issues occur!

Next would be my mentor Kyle Santee. He is a fellow creative in my field who has helped guide me with videography techniques and practices, which was completely foreign to me.
