We had the good fortune of connecting with Margeaux Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Margeaux, how do you think about risk?
I’m originally from Minneapolis MN and took the biggest risk of my life into moving to New York City to further my music career. If we never take risks, we never take chances.
Listen, if you have a dollar and a dream to your name, you MUST step out on faith.
Sometimes money literally makes us handicapped because why? We never seem to have enough right? But if you’re constantly thinking that, your thoughts become your action..
I just knew I needed to put a product out prior before moving to the big apple.
I made sure I finished my EP titled “Won’t Do It Again” (which is on ALL digital platforms)
I knew prior to moving that I needed to have something in my hand to show forth..
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Being a plus size type two diabetic Afro wearing black sheep of my family. Everything I had set out to do, I’m doing so. I said I wanted to relocate to NYC
Have a product to show forth and I do.
This journey has definitely not been easy simply because I have never had a Plan B. My Plan B has always been to make my Plan A work.
You simply get one life, so you better live it. There is no manual on exactly what, or how to “make it” in the music industry. Now I haven’t exactly “made it”
Don’t get me wrong, I have done background vocals for Alexander O’’Neil , Mint Condition, NEXT “Sounds Of Blackness” Paris Bennet and Jamecia Bennet Ruth Brown, Gladys Knight Etc.. “Season’s Of Love” soloist in The smash Broadway hit RENT
however, I had to continue to work a 9-5
Especially living here in nyc. It’s like Gods way of showing me that I am so close. Continuing to put me in front of all these Elaborate people.
My definition of making it in the music industry is NOT having to work a 9 to 5. Solely making money off of what I desire musically is making it in my book and working for self…
One must work while working.
What I am really truly proud of is continuing to believe in myself and continuing to believe in my dream.
New York City is not for everybody!
It will eat you up and spit you out and trust and believe; I have had my share. But you can’t be doubtful and faithful at the same time. That is what I believe that sets me a part from everyone else. My motto is… “if you want to be comfy in life, you must be uncomfortable.”
I don’t think I have ever been so uncomfortable !
My first few years in New York. The cost of living , having Roommates, being homeless then bam, making a decent amount then covid happening and feeling like you’re in limbo. Not feeling.. The entire world being in limbo. Especially for creatives.
What I have learned is that things are temporary, even when things are good And knowing that things will get better.
I make feel good music. It literally makes you “Feel Good”
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Things to check out in NYC “Red Rooster” Marcus Samuelson’s spot great food and live music
Harlem public a huge thank you to them for allowing me to have a residency
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I definitely want to shout out my two mentors Buffie Lucas in Las Vegas Nevada (Gladys Knight’s background vocalist) and my mentor in Minneapolis Minnesota Marri Harris.. These two ladies have been such a huge part of my life for many years. I had a gig in Minneapolis and Marri was in attendance. Marri was I believe one of the ONLY five people in the audience and basically got me in touch with now dear friend Andrew Rasmussen Broadway Director of RENT.
Marri and Buffie have supported me since I was 16 years old.. I use to go to Las Vegas and perform at the bootlegger off the strip where I met Buffie Lucas. The Bootlegger is an open mic for the stars that are off that particular Monday and wanna jam out with the band. I remember singing “ in a sentimental mood“ and funked it up with the band and Buffie approached me and we hit it off right away.. she is like my big sister!
Me being 35 now… I guess I have always put an age on EVERYTHING! I thought by a particular time in my life I would be this huge star… Buffie and Marri showed me differently… Things happen when they are supposed to happen however, if a door doesn’t open, build your own door and knock that damn thing down. I may not be exactly where I want to be in life but, I’m definitely not where I used to be… I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be
Age IS just a number… Age doesn’t define when success happens YOU do… Whenever that is and for that reason alone, I am so thankful for these two
