Meet Kristin Farmer: Graphic Designer & Founder

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristin Farmer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kristin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
There is merit to celebrating the little moments of life. Black women deserve to feel seen, heard, and loved. We are worthy of gifts that represent us to commemorate joyous times.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Curly Contessa is the curly girls’ guide to gifting. We are an online home good and giftware shop. Creating serene surrounding our product line includes drinkware, kitchenware, holiday gift wrap, garden and so much more. Adorned with portraits of Black women out products create a positive shopping experience for naturalistas across the globe.

I would like to think that my artwork reminds Black women to celebrate who we are naturally. I hope Black women see themselves as the beautiful sun-kissed goddess that we are through my illustrations. Curly Contessa is about embracing one’s self and living life to the fullest. My artwork consists of Black women with rosy cheeks and whimsical textured tresses.

Looking back over the past decade is very humbling. As a full-time graphic designer, I often delegated myself. After being laid off for a short spout during my earlier career, I rediscover my love for creating and painting. It helped me cope during some of the darkest moments. Years later I was diagnosed with Bipolar II and a Borderline Personality Disorder. Art helped me see my way through a dark tunnel. My work used to sit in the closet hidden, and now it’s a vessel to encourage others to enjoy the tiny moments.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Railroad Park, Cahaba Brewery The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
What my mentors told me… Melva Tate, HR Guru & Owner of Tate and Associate LLC, said, “Put it the work! If you are diligent, persistent, and authentic people will take notice.”

Dr. Suzanne Martin, owner of Transform Period, said, “Just do it! The worst thing that could happen is that I would have failed. And you learn from your failures.”

Jestine Howard, celebrity MUA & owner of Aware Cosmetics, often reminds me to “just keep it moving.”
