We had the good fortune of connecting with Josh and Courtney Booth and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Josh and Courtney, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
Outside of going into business for ourselves, one important decision that we made was to move out of our apartment in Vinings and into a 40 foot RV full time.
In March of 2020, right at the onset of the pandemic, our lease was ending and we had to decide if we were going to renew for another year or change our living situation completely. We were paying $1,100/month in rent for a 650 sq.ft. 1 bedroom apartment. We were in the middle of building our first shipping container home and decided that it would be more effective and efficient to manage the project onsite. So we notified the leasing office that we would not be renewing our lease, sold all of our furniture, and with only our clothes, moved into an RV with our two German Shepherds. It was by far the best decision we could have made.
Anyone who has started a business knows that it comes with a lot of tough decisions and sacrifice. That single decision allowed us to be more hands on with all of our projects as we can now move from site to site. We have been able to save what we were spending on rent and utilities each month to purchase more land and accelerate our potential growth rate tremendously.
Now over a year later, we continue to live in our 40 ft. RV with no end date in sight as we pour everything we have into the success of Concrete Roots.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
On the surface, Concrete Roots is a construction and design company specializing in residential contemporary new builds and renovation for resell. We are most recently known for the shipping container community we are developing in the Dixie Hills neighborhood of downtown Atlanta. We recently sold the first of 6 towards the end of last year. As a company, we are most proud of our commitment to community and our focus on sustainability, as we experiment with methods of energy efficiency and water retention. At our core, Concrete Roots is devoted to promoting home ownership and sustainability, while investing in community and human potential.
Our mission is to continue on the path to finding new and affordable ways to construct quality homes for young, progressive couples and families just like us. We also partner with existing local community organizations such as Active Youth Academy and Atlanta Center for Self-Sufficiency. By partnering with these organizations, we are able to actively participate in after school programing for at risk youth and provide on the job training in the trades (i.e. painting, flooring, plumbing, tile work, landscaping) for adults facing barriers of employment. Barriers can include but are not limited to former substance abuse or incarceration and/or homelessness.
That is what sets us apart. When you buy a Concrete Roots home, you should find peace in knowing that you are not just investing into your own home ownership, but you are reaffirming a neighborhood, creating a second chance opportunity for someone re-establishing their life and re-investing in the potential of our youth.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We are huge foodies, so much of our itinerary would be centered around food. Delbar is one of our go-to spots when we have friends come to town. The food never disappoints and the energy of Inman park especially for an early lunch in the spring is such a vibe. Josh has an obsession with Korean BBQ, so at some point we would make our way to Iron Age out in the Gwinnett or Sandy Springs area. Some other places we like to wine and dine: Fat Matts for BBQ, Harry and Sons on North Highland Ave. for Sushi., or Pasta Da Pulcinella for a nice quaint night with the best Tortelli di Mele I have ever had!
Pre-covid, we attended a lot of concerts, we both love live music at any scale, from State Farm Arena to watching small cover bands at small venues like City Winery. We also enjoy attending comedy shows at local venues like UpTown Comedy Club. During the summer months, we like to spend days boating on Lake Lanier or Allatoona or scanning the internet for the nearest neighborhood festival.
We are always looking for new things to try also like PuttShack thats opening later this month. Can’t wait! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Four shoutouts come to mind when we think about who we owe a lot of our growth to:
First, God. A lot of success in being an entrepreneur has to do with timing and resources. As believers, we have a strong conviction that we have been blessed beyond measure with both.
Our parents have been extremely supportive from allowing us to gain expertise flipping properties they owned to financially investing in us early on in the process. Their support allowed us to crawl before we could walk.
Tom Woodard, our General Contractor has shepherd us through the building process. Prior to building our first shipping container home, the only experience we had were in rehabs. Tom took Josh under his wing and taught him how to bring our concept to life.
Jeff Beal and the Compass Trilogy Team came in and understood our vision. They have been extremely proactive in spreading the word, building a great marketing and PR team to help us push our concept and guided us through the selling process. We truly could not have imagined a better realty group to be our partners in this journey.
