We had the good fortune of connecting with Demond Drayton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Demond, how do you think about risk?
Risk taking, to me, is moving away from my comfort zone to challenge myself to take on a new venture. As a photographer, it’s easy to get stuck with a certain “look” or get put in a box based on what a client wants. I try my best to push my boundaries with every shoot. A lot of the time, as entrepreneurs, we have to jump into things head first- knowing there’s a chance it may not go as planned. But I’m willing to take these risks to build my brand.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
One thing I’m proud of is how far I’ve come not only in such a short time, but that I’ve been able to do so without any major co-signers. I want other artists to read this and know that no matter where you come from, how long you’ve been working, or who you know- your goals are never out of your reach.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I like to eat, and you can’t visit the city without stopping for a good meal. We’d definitely hit Big Dave’s, Gino’s, Hudson Grille, and Gutbusters to name a few. We’d have to stop by Mama’s Cocina for a late night margarita. In between meals, I’d go to Main Event, TopGolf, the Aquarium, Andretti- or any place that brings some excitement.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shoutout two fellow photographers, Devin Jenkins (@highdevinition) and Brandon Moss (@brandmotionvisuals). From the very beginning, both always had great advice to offer me. Devin actually sold me my newest camera. In a lot of ways, they each had a hand in how I’ve grown as an artist.
