We had the good fortune of connecting with Sherman Harris and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sherman, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk is necessary for growth. I’ve always kept a fair amount of risk in my life and career, it helps me stay away from my comfort zone. I decided very early in life that the “satisfaction” of being comfortable isn’t worth expensing my growth and goals I set for myself.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Roze Gld has recently been acquired by our now parent company, Washington Ren Group. Throughout the transition, Roze Gld has gone through quite a shift. While we still help athletes and organizations both create and improve their business ventures under WRG, Roze Gld has become a luxury brand for individuals seeking comfort and style. We do our absolute best to make a statement in the market by placing heavy importance on the quality and care of our products and services. This is something that we are not only proud of, but we absolutely enjoy. Growing up in P.G. County, Maryland, sports were my thing. It was almost my complete identity. Throughout my childhood, basketball took the place of everything that wasn’t in academia and I fell in love with the sport. Fast forward a few years, basketball and football bled into my school life as well. Fortunately, I was able to compete and end my playing days at the Division I collegiate level playing football. Throughout this journey, I formed some of my closest friendships and networked with countless people. After school, I gained some great experience working in the finance industry. Between my passion for sports and experience working in finance, I had the foundation and the right toolset I needed to start my own management firm. Today, Roze Gld has grown into much more than just a management firm – I have everyone in my corner to thank for that. Has it been an easy road? Of course not. Prior to the company’s official launch, gathering the resources and the knowledge to effectively run this type of business was a challenge within itself. Post-launch was an obstacle as well. I’ve written an article on LinkedIn titled, A Short Script: Three Things I’ve Learned As A (6-month-old) Business Owner, to explain the tough challenges of being a new business owner. I touched on some of the important things I feel every new business owner should know. One of which was understanding the nature of the management/consulting business. In the first six months of operations, I had no clients. This was not only challenging from a financial perspective, but it also tested my confidence. Throughout every humbling experience thus far, there has always been light at the end of the tunnel. I live by my father’s words, “If it was easy, everybody would do it!”
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe quite a few folks some recognition for helping me navigate through both my own personal growth and in business. To my parents, thank you for setting an unwavering example of what strength and resilience looks like. To my brothers (BJ, AJ, Obi, Bob, Chris, Jake, et al.), thank you for providing me with support and a diverse circle and understanding who I am. To one of my mentors, Chris, thank you for helping me lay a roadmap and for pushing/providing me with opportunities to be the best businessman I can be.
