We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Myers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauren, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
I have definitely found myself at a crossroads wondering if I should keep going, but I believe what is meant for you is yours. We never know when we will accomplish our goals, so giving up shouldn’t be an option. These days, it is easy to get sucked into the comparison web when scrolling through social media. The thing about social media is that most posts are going to show you the glamorous side and omit the not so glamorous things and challenges. To compare 100% of yourself to the 50% (or less!) of what someone is showing you online doesn’t even add up. Rather than focusing on what others are doing, it’s important to stay focused on what you want to accomplish, do as much as you can to learn and improve your craft, and keep pushing! I do believe there is only one situation where you should change your focus. I don’t consider it giving up, but rather switching gears. This is when you don’t feel the passion for what you are working towards anymore. If the passion and drive isn’t there, you won’t be happy with what you’re doing and it will be much more difficult to accomplish your goal. If you begin to dread what you’re doing, it’s time to move on and try something else.
What should our readers know about your business?
My business, Lauren Myers & Co., is a digital resource for bloggers and solo entrepreneurs (solopreneurs!) that also work a 9-5. I teach productivity strategies and time-saving hacks through my incredibly helpful online courses and digital products, and through my blog content. I started this business as a response to my life as a blogger and business owner also holding down a day job and having a family life. With so many moving pieces in life, time is something that we all wish we had more of. I love to share ways to reclaim your time so you don’t have to put your dreams on the backburner. I still work a 9-5 and run my business/blog, so the strategies that I teach are ones that I know and use as well. This is what makes me unique- I know first hand what my audience needs because I am one of them! Before Lauren Myers & Co., I ran two other businesses. I was a freelance graphic designer then started a custom paper goods company. During these times, I ran into the challenge of being a one woman show and having so many tasks to handle alone. I would find myself performing mundane tasks such as manually adding my new customers to my email marketing list. These small things took time away from creating products- the thing that I loved. I then searched for a way to make this process easier and discovered the wonderful world of automation! I began creating automated tasks to do the things that I was doing manually and instantly noticed a huge difference in the time spent in my workflow. I realized that I loved automating these tasks so much that I wanted to share this knowledge with others that were also in my situation. This is when I shifted my focus and started Lauren Myers & Co. There are always lessons to be learned, however, the largest one that I learned in business so far is to just keep going. You have to keep pushing, keep learning, and keep creating. Sometimes it’s hard, but if you focus on what you’re trying to accomplish and imagine yourself there, you will do it! Another thing is not to get too caught up in perfection. Trying to perfect something is going to prevent you from releasing your products, services, etc. to the world. In a way, it’s kind of being selfish because you’re keeping the thing that someone may need to yourself. I believe in releasing great products/content, and making improvements to them when the time is right. This part of the process is something that many get stuck on. As the saying goes, “Progress Over Perfection”.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love a good latte, I love food and I love the outdoors, so a week-long itinerary in the city would be a little something like this: Coffee Shops: Gilly Brew Bar, Peach Coffee Roasters, Dancing Goats, BRASH Coffee, East Pole, Spiller Park, and B-Side. Eat & Drink: Little Rey, Bartaco, Fellini’s, La Fonda, South City Kitchen, Highland Bakery, Little Trouble, Mary Mac’s, 9 Mile Station, Bread & Butterfly, and Full Commission. Places to go/things to do: Krog Street Market, Ponce City Market, the Beltline, High Museum, MOMA, Atlanta Botanical Gardens, Queen of Cream, and Mac Lab.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shout out the following people who have always supported me: My husband: he has always been a huge supporter of my dreams and sounding board for my new ideas! My parents: they always told me that I can do whatever my heart desires as long as I put my mind to it and go for it! My friend, Katrina: I don’t know where I would be without her constant support, encouraging talks and continuous efforts to push me further.
