We had the good fortune of connecting with Shamia Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shamia, how does your business help the community?
Kopy Fresh serves as a sounding board for service-based brands all over the world. We amplify their positioning and brand story in an authentic way. Often, brands understand their business, but they struggle with their messaging. They either lack the time, skill, or will to effectively convey their services’ benefits to their ideal clients. That’s where we step in. Not only do we help brands sell their offers with precision, but we also craft messaging that forges connections with prospects. From there, one thing affects the next. Clear, compelling content and copy provide more opportunities for the right kind of visibility. That exposure then leads to better clientele and a boost to brands’ bottom lines. And those profits empower brands to attain success, contributing to a thriving economy.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Yes, we’re a black-owned, female-led copywriting and content writing company, but Kopy Fresh is so much more than that. We offer customized, hands-on experiences for each coach, consultant, and creative we support. At the core, we’re risk-takers and tide-changers. Our company takes the vision of service-based brands and brings it to fruition using powerful messaging. While I’m excited to do work I love, I’m also very proud that brands entrust me to capture their voice and deliver it with the right words in the right way. The feeling is unmatched! I launched Kopy Fresh back in February 2020 after walking away from my sales and marketing role with a non-profit company I’d worked with for years. I wasn’t new to the world of business as I had owned and operated a virtual call center since 2012. And writing has always been apart of my life, whether in school or my career. During college, I studied English. The knowledge I gained has provided the essential writing and research skills present in my copywriting work today. From there, I pursued a Master’s degree in instructional technology, where I learned how to create and deliver content to end-users. It wasn’t until the promising career I thought I had on lock wasn’t offered that I began to consider starting another business. Once I realized I could make a great living providing a necessary service I had the expertise to do, it was on! It wasn’t an easy decision to leap because it meant giving up the “security” I thought I had with my 9-5 job. On top of that, I had no clue how to run a copywriting business! So, I prayed about it, did my research, sought advice from my family and friends, and bet on me. I haven’t looked back since. The biggest lesson I’ve learned along the way is to stop waiting around for the “perfect” time to do work that fulfills you. Do it now and do it scared. Your passion will always create room for you.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My best friend and I are pretty low-key, so we don’t have to do much to have a good time. If she weren’t already living in the area and came to visit, I’d take her to Ponce City Market to hang out at the Skyline Park on the rooftop. After playing games and having some drinks, we’d hit up one of the many restaurants and peruse the shops. At some point during her trip, we’d also head to Decatur Square to walk the downtown area, find some amazing Thai food, and indulge in good music. Honestly, it wouldn’t be unusual for us to chill at my house for most of the week, reminiscing, watching movies, and cooking (with wine on standby). It’s always fun, no matter what we do!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The Kopy Fresh brand would not be as successful today without the genuine love and support of family, friends, clients, and business mentors. I want to give a HUGE shoutout to my husband, Courtney, who has always pushed and encouraged me to do the work I love. I’d also like to shout out my affiliate partner team, The Kollab (Shatakia, Alesa, Imani, & Andre), as each team member has been instrumental in my growth as a small business owner. And I can’t forget Nikki Venus of Nikki Venus & Company, who was one of the catalysts to launch Kopy Fresh – she continues to motivate me to level up in my business. Finally, I want to shout out the following ladies for the consistent support and sound advice: Steishia, Katina, Cannisha, Loren, Kevin-Marie, and Shontaye. You ALL rock!
