Meet Jade Cabrya: The Makeup + Media Maven

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jade Cabrya and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jade, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
The single most important decision I’ve made that has contributed to my success thus far is simply betting on myself! I’ll bet on myself even if my last dollar counted on it! It’s like that quote, “I’m a hustler baby, if I don’t have it today, I’ll have it by tomorrow,” and I think about that quote almost everyday!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
So I unknowingly started my first business back in 2015 during my freshman year of college. I was one of “those” girls in college that showed up to class dolled up and face beat every single day no matter what time my class was. I pretty much wore makeup all throughout high school, so it was no different in college, if anything it was more dramatic lol. My classmates started asking me if I could start coming to class earlier (we had a 9 am class at the time) to do their eyebrows and how much would I charge them. I had no intentions at the time or even thought about doing other people’s makeup but the next thing I know, that’s exactly what I was doing, filling in eyebrows at 7-8 am in class and it pretty much started from there. I created my makeup page, @slayedbyjade_ in 2015, and when I transferred to a HBCU, that’s when my clientele picked up, even though I didn’t take it as seriously as I should have or wanted to, the business was steady. I pretty much had clientele at home in Atlanta and at school in Louisiana, so I would travel back and forth. I think the hardest part thus far has been consistency! The biggest challenge I’ve had thus far was when COVID hit, but even then, I turned a negative into a positive, and instead of servicing clients physically, I now offer an online makeup academy course for aspiring makeup artists/enthusiasts, where I demonstrate different makeup techniques + looks, answer any questions, assist them with their desired look and provide them with an exclusive guide book. I also started selling physical makeup products for my second business which is @TheSlayScoietyCosmetics, which pretty much is a branch off The Slayed By Jade Tree, as I like to call it. I now sell mink eyelashes, lipglosses and will be adding more products soon. Lastly, I started doing graphics and building websites when Coronavirus came as well to make up for being fired right before Covid hit (I stayed getting fired or quitting a job chile) and since I couldn’t service my makeup clients physically, I decided to add another stream of income by doing graphics. I feel like it was a talent I’ve known I’ve had for years, but never wanted to tap into it. Just like doing makeup, in college my peers wanted me to create graphics for them which at the time, I did not have an interest in at all. I enjoyed making graphics and building websites for MYSELF lol but not anybody else. I would make cute flyers or motion graphics to gain more makeup clientele or advertise my makeup services and I also used to create cute graphics for the podcast I had on campus when I was in college advertising our show, when to listen, etc. So once again, I unknowingly started a third business, SBJ Media, which I still can’t believe. I think overall the biggest struggles have been consistency and not “being in my head too much,” because as a creative, it’s easy to question your work or if something’s done, “the right way,” when really your way IS the right way. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to listen to God and the universe when venturing out or starting a business and to always bet on myself and to believe in my craft!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Okay so if I’m doing a list for my bestie, I’ll include the more “ratchet or hood” places since they always have bomb food, hookah, and the music is always great! Places like Madhouse, Harolds + The Mexican if it’s a tequila night! Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I think it takes a village for anybody to be successful, so I definitely have to give recognition to mine. It wouldn’t be right for me to not give a huge thanks to God for allowing the creativity, drive, and ambition to flow through me and also protecting me while I’m on my entrepreneurship journey. Secondly, I have to give a huge thanks to my praying village of my mom, grandma, and god mom, anything I do or have done, they send prayers up for me and I’ve always been super grateful for that. I also want to shoutout to my friends, sister, boyfriend, and supporters (aka my social media besties) for reposting my content, investing in my endeavors, referring me, and even purchasing/supporting my businesses.
