Meet Richard Simms | Co-Founder – Tyrannosaurus Tech

We had the good fortune of connecting with Richard Simms and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Richard, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I think the most important factor behind our success has been our focus on fostering long-term relationships based on trust. The business and brand have been built with a very “boots on the ground” mindset in that so much of our success boils down to the broad network we’ve built, particularly in Atlanta. We strive to be good stewards of technology and a trusted resource not just for our clients but for the broader community. So, particularly in the early years of the business, we spent a lot of our energy going to local events, mentoring early-stage startups, hosting educational events, and just generally trying to help support the Atlanta technology community.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Tyrannosaurus Tech is an award winning technology firm dedicated to designing and developing high impact software products. We act as a technology partner for organizations looking to launch new and innovative SaaS (software as a service) products in healthcare, public health, and education. What we are most excited about and proud of is helping our clients create and scale digital products that help people and have a positive impact in our community. Acting as a technology partner, we’ve been able to build solutions that play a role in addressing issues ranging from food safety and water quality to education and equity. With our brand, our goal has been to make technology and innovation approachable and fun. We seek to demystify technology and empower organizations to amplify their impact with tools like mobile and web applications. Tech doesn’t have to be intimidating or buttoned-up. We take pride in being a good steward of technology and educating our clients through the process of creating a new digital product.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A lot of people who have never visited Atlanta are really surprised by how funky and eclectic it can be. I would take them to neighborhoods like Little Five Points, East Atlanta Village, and Grant Park. A long stroll down the Beltline or through Piedmont Park are also great ways to experience the city, of course. I would also take them hiking and camping in North Georgia to really experience the mountains and nature Georgia has to offer.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shout out has to go to the Atlanta tech startup community, to which we owe so much of our success. I grew up in Atlanta and when I moved back here in 2013, the startup community was in some ways still in its infancy, but I found even the big-name movers & shakers to be very approachable and supportive. I’m not sure if it is a “southern culture” thing or what, but it felt different than the “more advanced” tech scenes in Chicago and D.C. that I had previously been working in. From spaces like Atlanta Tech Village, Switchyards, and ATD to entrepreneurs like Dave Payne, Jeff Hilimire and Ashish Mistry, I have benefited immensely from the support of the local community. Since 2013, the tech scene in Atlanta has absolutely exploded and the resources available are amazing. I feel very lucky to have built relationships in the space in the early days and to have been able to watch the scene grow.
