We had the good fortune of connecting with Trish Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Trish, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I personally view risk as a necessity when it comes to life in general. I love taking calculated risks because I’ve always been a very methodical person. Although, I am a creative I am still extremely analytical. I’ve never been someone who just dreams without formulating a plan to attack the goals I’ve been dreaming about. To me, risk is the only way to grow. Staying in your comfort zone may be comfortable, but it is unlikely to help you grow and I cannot stand being stagnant. I always use risk to push me and each time I go outside of m comfort zone, it gets easier and easier to take the next risk with less fear. Everyone has fears, its just a matter of if you’re going to let those fears stop you, or will you use them to push you?
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am currently the Creative Director, Owner and Lead Stylist at Trish B. Stylin’ Design. This journey has been more like reading a new book than anything else. If I look back to where I was a year ago, I had no idea I’d be here today. Firstly, I started out just doing alterations, I wasn’t doing any type of creative wok. I just wanted to be able to pay my bills, which many artists struggle with in their careers first starting out. However, because I have children I was always determined to not be a struggling artist, so my first priority was always going to be “how can I bring in continuous profit first – then be an artist second.” I set a goal to do alterations for 3 years and to transition into more creative work after that 3 year period, I would have a staff to continue the alterations work. I recently hired two staff, YES- during a pandemic and am now doing more art displays and exhibitions as was always my goal. The part to me that has been more unexpected has been the creative director role, casting fashion shows, model training sessions and more recently stying shoots to be be used by brands such as EXPRESS MEN. It has been a whirlwind to say the least and not easy at all but I am a woman that when I make a plan, I like to stick to it until completion with minimal deviation if it can be avoided. I do NOT like spontaneity. As I’ve grown and been in more and more productions such as working with Savannah State University where I directed the RIP the Runway Get Out the Vote Fashion show which was followed by performances by Keke Palmer, I never thought I’d be a celebrity Stylist either, designing gowns for the likes of Christina Rae! As much of a control freak as I am, my career has been completely a surprise to me, Ha ha- because no matter how much I’ve planned, there are still opportunities I never knew would present themselves to me, but I am NOT complaining!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I LOVE the beach! If my best friend came to visit for a week, we’d. Hit all the closest beaches and spend our days lounging and eating Pho, gourmet ramen and seafood. We’d definitely, hit the botanical gardens and art galleries to feed our souls! Then we absolutely have to walk River Street and end enjoy the breeze and probably a ghost tour or two!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have had a great deal of metamorphosis in the last year. One person I would like to attribute much of my growth to is Victoria Baylor. She has been my Personal and Branding Coach for the last several weeks. Forcing me to address self-defeating attitudes I was having about myself and helping me unlock my SHINE. Another person has been my mother, Sherri. She has been right behind me, pushing me to and telling me when I need to stop being so critical of myself and celebrate my wins, Her ability to help me slow down has been eye opening and shown me that although I’m hyper critical of myself, I have accomplished so much already and I was missing it by not stopping to pat myself on the back to acknowledge all my hard work.
