We had the good fortune of connecting with Dawn Henderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dawn, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
There really was not much of a thought process until it was pretty much already a business. Everyone knows that I love all things holistic and natural. I’ve always been the girl with a home remedy for anything, and my kid even goes to a holistic pediatrician. I think that people really just trusted my advice and what I shared about what herbs, and remedies helped with my family and I. So when I made too much of a coffee scrub I used for my face and body, I went online to see if anyone wanted the extra and so many people inquired that I made more. At that point, I would say I thought it was just a phase so the thought process for me was to just keep going until people stopped asking. Once I really got serious, I just wanted people to know that it’s important what you put into and on your body, and also how you take care of yourself mentally and spiritually is important as well. As long as I’m passionate about where this business comes from and what I stand for, the goal is to continue to grow so more people can learn that.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the holistic herbalist and cosmetic chemist behind my brand. I formulate and handcraft all of my products myself. I don’t have a favorite accomplishment because I feel like within 2 years of business, I accomplished things that I would have not even imagined, and that is what makes me proud. Easy? ABSOLUTELY NOT! I have cried and given up so many times, I’ve lost count. To be very honest. as much as it has become popular, or a goal (should I say) to be an entrepreneur, that comes with a lot because a lot more people are tearing down businesses now and using social media to do it because if it’s online, it’s valid to most people and as a business owner you have to learn how to always choose the high road and that was tough for me.That was the biggest challenge to overcome for me. I remember thinking I was the only one who went through certain things with business, then I realized everyone goes through it. I’m passionate about what I do, and I love what I do. I don’t believe you can have a successful business that you aren’t passionate about.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My village for sure! It takes a village to build a business just as well as it takes one to raise a child. My family has worked customer service, my boyfriend has taken loads orders to the post office for me, I have had interns that have worked events for me, I’ve had my mom and cousin in the lab with me, my friends have had to calm me down when I’m losing my mind, and they have done all of the above before as well. I will say, support from them still was not enough for me to keep going. My peers, my social media friends who never met me, and my loyal customers keep me going too. It hits a little different when people who don’t know you support you like they know you. When it comes to other entrepreneurs, Tay Watts of Posh Candle Co has definitely been great! She’s an amazing and has always been an ear and it’s good to have someone who can actually relate to your issues. Elondia Harden of ElonWick is a dope woman in business as well. She is beyond supportive, and I don’t even think she realizes how her words have kept me going. She also checks in on my family and kid too, and that means the world to me. There’s more, but I can go on forever. The support, the words, and the love I have received has been beyond abundant, and I am forever grateful.
