We had the good fortune of connecting with Renetta Gunn-Stevens and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Renetta, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risks is necessary for success. Taking risks displays that what you are aiming for outweighs the dangers of your current circumstance. Taking risks identifies that you want more and you feel like you deserve more. Three years ago I took the risk of investing in self-publishing a book. I was not aware of the significance that decision would have on my life. A book turned into a business and now I get to help others take the same risk with self-publishing!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Sophisticated Press is a publishing house outside of Chicago. We believe, “Every business should have a book and every book is a business.” We are three years old and have established international clients as far as Bermuda. What sets us apart are the payment plans we offer and the intimate setting we have created for authors to learn how to tell their stories. The challenges we faced were going against the BIG Publishing Houses with the BIG budgets for marketing and advertising. Our clients have profited from our service so we are blessed to have great referrals from them that partners with our marketing on social media. One of the lessons I have learned along the way is to always think of others before yourself. When you really want to help people solve their problems your problems get solved as well.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Chicago Itenary starts at 8:00 a.m. We would begin the day at Juicy O’s for some breakfast and homemade doughnuts. 12: 00p.m. We would go to Oak Brook Mall to do a little outdoor shopping. At 1:00 p.m. lunch at Cajun Boil. At 3:00 p.m. we would go downtown and walk through Millenial Park and take a historic boat tour on Lake Michigan. At 5:00 p.m. we definitely have to hit up Jo Jo Shake Bar. At 6:00 p.m. go to the W hotel to chill. At 9:00 p.m. it time to get classy and sassy to walk on Rush Street and check out the nightlife. On Sunday it is time to fellowship. We would attend church service at Living Word Christian Center.
