We had the good fortune of connecting with Kimberly King and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kimberly, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve always hated a traditional 9 to 5 job. Don’t get me wrong, it’s needed and bills have to be paid. But deep down I knew in my heart that I could be successful creating my own source of income using my God-given talents. So in 2018, I started my own business and began the growth of my brand. I figured with all the commissions works I’ve been getting as years have passed, why not start my own company. Getting everything started was more difficult than actually working on my art. I still have a lot of work to do and much to learn in order to get my small business headed in the right direction. One of the challenges I’ve had to overcome and still struggle with, is time management and consistency. Throughout my career as a creative, I’ve experienced many scenarios of wanting to take excessive breaks and even worse giving up. I’ve learned to work on my inner peace everyday, stay focused on the positive and never get upset over things I have no control over. And with those lessons I’m able to grow my business and stay focused each and every day.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My work varies depending on my mood. Most will say I have a distinct style but I honestly just go with the flow. In my later works I’ve began a concept of giving every subject or muse an “energy” or “ora” around them. This has been something I’ve noticed drawing in my older sketches and previous works. It’s a distinct design I’ve created that makes the main image pop out a little. For me, its somewhat fauvism with a touch of abstract feel. I definitely love to use a variety of colors in one piece. Sometimes I may tone it down and keep it to a few colors but I love a splash of colors in my works. It makes it more interesting to look at and wakes you up a little lol. Overall I feel my work is “different”. My ongoing art career is definitely a process and I’m excited to see my work evolve into something amazing.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Welp sorry to say I do not get out much but I have been apart of some awesome art events and venues lately. Definitely would want to bring a friend to many art galleries in the city such as the High Museum. Maybe grab a bite to eat at Flower Child near Lenox Mall. Also the Trap Museum would be another dope spot to visit. Yet again more art to check out as well as getting to meet new people. Then of course I’d slide over to Escobar for some good eats. For evening fun it really depends of what’s going on but I love hanging out on Edgewood. Theres always something going on as far as events and shows. I’ve also enjoyed Artisan Art Bar and Gallery where I’ve attended and participated in many amazing events. I really don’t have a go to as far as hanging out because I’m home majority of the time but I’m usually not far from something fun to get into.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shout out to basically everyone who has supported me since the beginning of my artistic journey. Before I became a legitimate business I had so much support from my family, friends and colleagues. Throughout my art career I began getting recognition from word of mouth and social media connections as well. And also the support from the amazing art community I’m apart of. Little do they know so much inspiration comes from the creativity and consistency of other artists.
