We had the good fortune of connecting with Jayna Elise and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jayna, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I am from anywhere and everywhere but most recently DC. I moved around a lot as a kid and I feel that that made me very adaptable, almost like a Chamaeleon. Now, I am able to adapt to almost any situation and be able to make the most of it
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I feel what sets me apart from others regarding my art is that it’s not just about the art for me. It’s moreso about the message. A lot of times I ask myself “What do I want people to feel when listening to this song?”, “What do I want them to learn about me or about themselves?” That’s what I’m so excited about as an artist. To be able to share my vulnerability with people and create a bond from artist to listener, then back to artist. And that is what I want people to know. I want people to know that when they listen to my music, they are listening to an extension of my life, of my soul. I want them to know that they are not alone in what they go through or what they experience and that we are all more similar than we think.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Right now, I live in a little city called Roanoke. It’s small but don’t underestimate the music scene haha. I’m going to talk pre-covid when people could actually do things. First things first, we gotta stop at my favorite restaurant, Caribbica Soul. Locally owned restaurant with BANGING food. Sweetest people ever and some of my biggest supporters. After we get some food, we might go and check out the music scene. The Spot on kirk has some amazing performers come through and Corned Beef and Co. brings through artists that can share their own music, no covers (it’s an actual rule lol). If we still got some energy we can roll through Firehouse Skate and Play and get our roller skating on or we can slide down to Arete Pole and get on some pole fitness. When everything’s closed and it seems that everyone has gone home, we’ll take a trip up to the Star. It’s quite literally a gigantic star up on a mountain and at night it lights up the whole city. Or, we could stay inside all day and play video games haha!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate this to my girl Ja’ness! She is extremely talented, extremely hard-working, and has such a good heart. I cannot wait to see how far she goes.
