We had the good fortune of connecting with Nika Corbett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nika, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
The Black Owned Business Box came from my need to pivot during the pandemic, from my current business model of offering just digital marketing services to select clients, to being able to work with a larger group of business owners, who now have the opportunity to reach that many more people since the world has turned remote.
What should our readers know about your business?
My passion for helping small businesses to thrive is the heart of the business. I want to make sure that the world knows that they have many brands, that are on the shelves at the store and many who aren’t, that are Black Owned and more than ready to deliver fabulous products to your door. Being in marketing for over 20 years, I thought building this model was something that would be easily go viral, utilizing the tools and platforms that are currently out there. Though they are a portion of our marketing strategies, our main voice is the people, our subscribers and our business partners. It’s more like a group of friends working together to help each one to succeed. That is what I love most about the box. We also have a magazine that compliments our boxes. The magazine was first created as an insert to talk about our box partners. Our magazine has since become a lot more popular to other Black Owned Businesses who are looking for another outlet to market their business without having to spend a lot of money. We make sure it’s available in every box that goes out and it’s available digitally online. So we now able to reach that much greater of an audience in order to give these businesses an opportunity to gain new clients. It’s been amazing.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Each day would be a new adventure. Since we are located in NJ, we have NYC and Philadelphia within reach. We would definitely hit NYC first and visit some attractions there. The place we’d eat would be Blvd Bistro in Harlem, owned by my best friend and her husband. Later in the week, we’d spend some time in Philly. We would visit some museums and definitely have a steak sandwich at Joe’s. When the weekend comes, Atlantic City here we come. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate this to my rock, my husband. He stands by me in every inch of my business. He says up late to brainstorm, he gets up early with me, before the kids have to start remote schooling, to pack boxes with me and he is always supporting me and encouraging me to keep the focus and help as many people as you can.
