We had the good fortune of connecting with Tiffany Roberts and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tiffany, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I started, I was doing gigs as a singer/song writer and I remember hearing all the time that you have to build your brand and you are a business. It didn’t really resonate until I did my first theatrical production The Mistress Club, that it sunk in. Producing a large show forced me to put things in order. I started my business at first just to move production expenses etc. ;however, once I started increasing my knowledge and building my brand I realized I had to expand my business to cover all of my services.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is multi-dimensional I would say. From my songs when I wrote my album Simply Me to the stories I write which includes a children’s story series and two novels all coming out this year. I try to cater to all ages, nationalities, and genders. I want people to understand that good and bad things happen to everyone and sometimes the exact same situations. I put a little piece of me or my life or someone close to me in my stories. Realism is the best story telling, I always say. My journey has been somewhat challenging as when I moved to Atlanta over 20 years ago, I was a single mom in school and working 3 jobs (yes 3 two pt time jobs and one full) and I still don’t know how I did it, but I have always been driven. I came to ATL to pursue my singing career and performed in different arenas. but quickly realized that business was not for me, the singing was, but not the “seedy business” so I decided to turn my attention to just writing and producing plays as theater has always been a passion as well. The Mistress Club was my first production and it took a couple tries before I figured it all out. Then it was all smooth sailing, lol ok not really but I learned a lot in a short time. I now have 4 plays The Mistress Club, Mock of Life, The Elevator (tribute to 911), and The Chief’s wife, and finally my greatest creation a full musical titled Angels in Training in my database for theater, On the film side I wrote 2 full features and one is being optioned for production and 3 series that are all in line for production this year. I have started at least 10 more in preparation for 2022 and 2023. I would say it took separating myself from people who were at the same level as me and connecting with people who were more successful. That may sound crazy but in life if you stay in the average pool because it feels safe, you will never learn to swim in the excellence pool, you have sink a little then tread before you can stroke with champions. In other words I had to be around people who forced me to be better and NO it was not easy at all but well worth it! I have learned that first we have wings and can fly at anytime, we just have to leap of the edge and soar. You will hit a few branches and power lines and even break a wing, but you can and will recover leaning on your faith and will to succeed! I have had bad relationships, lost lots of money and friends, sacrificed more than my heart wanted too, but it all delivered me to my today! An arsenal of projects, an album, a beautiful family, some amazing friends and life connections so I wouldn’t change one thing! I want people to know that when you work with Simply Tiffany Soul, you are creating a life relationship and my team and myself cater to each client as if they were blood family. The projects that we create connect the cerebral dwelling as well as the heart and soul. That is the brand legacy that I want to live on after me.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This happens a lot actually. Currently Covid has us all scared to even look outside at times lol. Pre-Covid when friends come to town of course we have to release the stress and go to the spa at Chateau Elan, then a nice lunch or dinner at Pappadeaux’s seafood place in Duluth. From there I love music so we would go to Sweet Georgia juke joint or Cafe 290 or some great Karaoke anywhere around town. I love the Atlanta Eats show so I always pick a place highlighted to take them to for dinner. I don’t like to manipulate all of their time so I ask what do you want to see. Most of the time people want to see the Black history exhibit at the MLK center or ride the Ferris wheel in downtown. I have to take them to Atlantic station and little 5 points for diverse types of culture and Slutty Vegan is a MUST!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There is a long list of shout out’s as I learned in the entertainment industry you CAN NOT do it alone. First, I want to thank my family (especially my daughter who is always right by my side) as they never ever stopped supporting me, even through my failures. A sound support system is key! Next my sister Monique Slaughter of Moe Designs. She is a master graphic artist and amazing writer, and has made what I do look amazing! Next Deondai Colquitt of Keona Marketing, my Executive coordinator/ production manager / right hand woman and an amazing marketing strategist and coordinator as well I am also honored to call her Sista Friend! My other bestie Shonda Cheekes an author and real estate specialist as she is my life line to balance and drive. I would be nothing if I didn’t shout out Karlotta and Dre Washington owners of Mark Squared Studios, where I cultivated my talents in many ways. We have been creating magic together for over 10 amazing years! There are many more but I want to thank Lonnie Jackson creator of Upyri and Shawn Hutchinson of the Formula Group who are amazing friends and two men to watch out for in the Entertainment industry.
