Meet Aspen Lee | Songwriter & Musician

We had the good fortune of connecting with Aspen Lee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Aspen, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
Be authentic to yourself, don’t follow crowds or what’s popular. Trends come and go, it’s an ever changing cycle so instead of following what’s “big” at that very moment just do what feels good & makes you confident in your work. Certain people will try to push their opinions onto you but thats the only thing they are, opinions. It’s not gonna change you & hurt you because one or a few people disagree with your approach.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started singing at a very young age in church & every weekend I had free I would beg my parents to go sing karaoke at a local Mexican restaurant in our town. I’ve always loved singing & music so I asked if I could take guitar lessons and I started at age 15 and that very next spring I began playing at small town festivals here and there whenever possible. It’s a very exhausting & tough job. Mentally, physically & emotionally speaking you have to be VERY strong and push yourself almost every day but in the end it’s so rewarding. What really helped me was writing honestly, I use my writing as a form of therapy & getting everything off my chest whether or not that piece of art ever sees the light of day. Every artist is different in how they express themselves, I think personally mine is my image & also my writing style which has changed throughout the years. This past year I’ve began writing darker, moodier, I guess you could say spookier & morbid type songs because that’s honestly how I feel and what I think fits me best. I’ve always been extremely into the spooky vibes & paranormal so I’ve been trying to figure out a way to inject that into my music world as well for the last few months. It’s all about personal preference and what makes you feel most like yourself.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I honestly don’t go out much unless it’s for gigs but I’d probably take them to the Corner Cafe, the underground bookstore & the Vinyl Frontier which is all located in Carrollton, Ga for one day. I do also love the aquarium & zoo I love animals a lot so probably take a few days to do that… If we’re going out for drinks, I’m personally not much of a drinker but if we wanted something more chill plus be outdoors Pabella’s Winery & Vineyard in West Point, Ga has WONDERFUL slushees & wine in general for my personal taste. A very comfy place that feels like home, the owners are wonderful people I play there a few times a year so there is live music on the weekends along with different food trucks. I think those are a few things I’d like to take them to do.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m so thankful for everyone who’s been coming and going throughout my journey but I want to shoutout my parents, they’ve been here since the very beginning of starting music. They’ve come to every gig, festival, etc. I’ve ever played at & refuses to miss any shows. They’ve always been my rock & kept me stable since starting this so I’m very grateful & lucky to have them.
