Meet Naimah Thompson | Content Creator, Screenwriter & Actress

We had the good fortune of connecting with Naimah Thompson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Naimah, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Honestly it kind of just happened? I began my journey as an artist through my need of expression. I loved drawing as a child. I was always known as one of the more artistically gifted students in my classes.
It was only when I started watching YouTube videos in elementary school that I saw everyday people turn into stars overnight.
I became inspired and hoped really hard that one day I would be famous online for content creation.
My youth’s aspirations was centered around receiving validation. To feel seen and heard.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m only at the beginning of my work, as I’m entering a new era of my life. My journey started out with content creation. I made dance videos in high school, posting them on Instagram. Nothing professional, just a teen rocking out in their living room. It caught some attention, and people found the videos funny.
I then shifted into the realm of beauty with the 2010s self care trends. I allowed myself to venture into the world of makeup during the pandemic, and this is when my presence online took shape.
I built a following getting dressed up, doing my makeup and hair, lip syncing to popular sounds on TikTok. This is after my many attempts making YouTube content. Overnight I went from zero followers to 20k followers as a college dropout working at a beauty supply store during the peak of the pandemic.
In the fall of 2020, on the same week of Thanksgiving, my grandmother passed away from Covid. After her passing I decided to go back to school after my gap semester.
I’ve maintained a following of 45k followers on TikTok by expanding my content to more than beauty content, but politics. Some of my biggest videos are from when I was discussing politics, and the state of our country.
With the shutdown of TikTok looming over me during my senior year in college, I got an itch to give YouTube another shot. I felt inspired by TikTok discourse around the “Weird Black Girl” label.
I was often referred to as a Weird Black Girl because of my multiple marginalized backgrounds (i.e. being fat, Black, queer, non-binary, and neurodivergent). I then decided to make my “Hey Weird Black Girl” video back in July and it currently sits at 48k views.
I decided to make my YouTube channel my discourse diary where I “yap” about serious topics that interest me. These topics touch on my Blackness, Queerness, and Fatness. Raw, unfiltered thoughts based on my life experiences.
Alongside my content creation, I’ve also written about my experiences online. My playwright debut was at Georgia State University’s “Give Back Series” with my short play “#AmericaHasAProblem SPONSORED POST” which followed an influencer’s struggle of being cyber bullied because of their body size.
I’ve went on to also participate in Georgia State Perimeter’s “Plays in A Day” theatre festival as a playwright in the fall of 2024.
My goal with being an actress & screenwriter is to provide representation for marginalized people, and at this time my focus is on plus size representation. The lack of adequate representation of plus size characters is what brought me to the theatre and film & media space through my involvement in high school.
I attended Lithonia High School in Dekalb County. My school’s drama department was solely my drama teacher, Ms. Harris. It was an environment where we DIY productions and made them work with what we had. Nothing big in terms of finances, but it left an incredible impact on my career.
I was in almost all of the productions as an actress. I was also heckled. That experience broke me down. An audience member made a fart noise when I sat down pointedly at my weight. I was so embarrassed, but I got back up. I made a promise after that show to make media where I am represented, so incidents like that are less likely to happen because plus size representation is not a gag, it’s a reflection of real life.
My marginalized backgrounds don’t hold me back, instead they are my super power. I’ve always been relatively quiet in public. I’m introverted. Speak when spoken to. I am in this moment learning how to use my voice for good, for education. I’m learning that voicing my thoughts and views through my love of art is what sets me apart. One of my standout qualities is the way that I edit my videos.
My videos aren’t just my thoughts, but a visual experience.
My brand is new, but the biggest takeaway should be its authenticity.
Finally, yes I did finish college with my Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with my focus on Acting in the Summer of 2024!!!!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
With unlimited budget…you’d definitely catch me at The Plaza Theatre. Messing around with the film photobooth after watching movies shot on film. I would also love to go to Jazzy Juice on Panola Road for amazing smoothies. Finally I’d probably just relax at any of the Dekalb County libraries digging for some movies to check out.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would dedicate my success to my ancestors for enduring a lot just for me to be here today. My late grandmother, Irolla Thomas, had a major hand in raising me alongside my brother and mom.
