We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashana Kaiulani and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashana, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I love this question! It wasn’t so much a thought process, as a natural unfolding that happened once I *allowed.* In recent years, I had done EVERYTHING in my life from a place of deep thinking, over-analyzing and trying to predict every outcome. It was exhausting! Not just physically (though I did basically run entirely on caffeine), but also mentally — small setbacks would cause me to spiral into insecurity and second guess myself.
Once I started to feel more comfortable with who I am and how I naturally feel called to do things, the urge to force my way through on brain power faded away. I *thought* my business would be focusing JUST on holistic nutrition, something I had found a passion for and gone to school for.. turns out my skills and experiences are also helpful in another way.
I leaned into what I knew I could offer, to help others experience real, lasting transformation – the kind that can alter the course of your life by shifting the way you see yourself, or the way you see the world. I knew it would call on my perspective on thriving and finding peace after trauma. On rewriting your story by simply deciding what you want to bring forward with you, and what you don’t. This gave voice to the way I went from that over-thinker and micro-manager to a person who truly feels settled in letting life flow. From anticipating the next event, calculating all of my steps to make sure I don’t rock the boat, to really questioning norms and inviting others to do the same — forget about rocking the boat, do you even want to BE on a boat?? Where do you want to be? what does that look like? And how would your unique personality bring a magical flavor to that?
Along the way I realized – I’ve been so great at encouraging others to notice their internal nudges and feel what’s right for them. It was absolutely time I did the same. And from that, North Star Rising was born. From there I sought the education and resources I knew could support me on this journey, and simply kept taking the next step. The beauty that has unfolded and the human connection I’ve had the blessing to experience along the way have been truly magical!

What should our readers know about your business?
North Star Rising is a work of passion and drive, that is rooted in the belief that every person has everything they need to be peaceful and free, already within. The difficult emotions, the internal setbacks and the critical self dialogue.. those are all things that fade away when a person is ready to embody that *ideal* self they’ve been searching for.

My philosophy sets me apart from others because I believe there is more to a person’s story than a diagnosis or labels. When traditional therapy has left you still feeling misunderstood; when self-help books and podcasts have provided helpful information but a lack of integration; when medicine just doesn’t feel like the right solution for YOU….. that is when our journey begins. My work sets me further apart because I help you integrate, in real time, the truths that have been there all along: you are not broken, your past does not define your future, your emotions are a source of wisdom – not weakness, and you CAN break those repeating cycles of self-defeat for good. Your ideal self is NOW.

I am MOST excited about the change that this foretells for the world: Can you imagine a society of people who are fully present and feel safe in the moment, who embody their authentic values and maintain healthy boundaries with confidence and understanding? Who view their emotions as compassionate friends guiding them deeper into self-love, helping them move forward as heart-centered, fully empowered individuals who share their creativity and passions with the world? Who embrace curiosity over criticism? This work lights me up. Children who are born to parents who can hold space for their unique wisdom.. those are children who will certainly bring radical beauty into this world.

How I got here in my business.. was it easy? That’s a loaded question. It was quite simple, but I can’t say that it felt “easy” in the moment. I was not born to parents who valued the things i believe in. Unfortunately my parents were still very much in the struggles of their own painful pasts, and as a result I bore much of that shame for them. Through parental Borderline Personality Disorder, devastating narcissistic abuse, and foster care at a young age, I very quickly learned how to change who I presented as — to fit in and to be accepted. Unearthing my authentic emotions and feeling safe to feel them fully was quite a journey. I learned many things about myself, like how loving I truly am at my core, how loyal I am, and how much I believe in the best possibilities for people. I also learned a lot about humans in general: how deeply we need connection and belonging to thrive and feel safe. How steadfastly we might deny our own vulnerability if it feels like it could pose a threat to our identity. And how heart-breakingly compassionate we can be, when we embrace our own needs as a human who deserved to have them met when we were children.

I want the world to know that it’s okay to slow down. It’s okay to be present with where you’re at, and REALLY feel it. No shame necessary. I want you to know that you are just as deserving of love now, as you were when you first came into this world. Because time is irrelevant, my friend. The power of RIGHT NOW is that you’re here, and you do still have all of your power. You CAN step into it. Sometimes that might mean learning to give that love to yourself. And that’s something special I’ve learned about me: I am GREAT at holding space for others to learn how to do that.

It feels SO good to be able to say: I am an amazing, powerful, light-filled human RIGHT NOW, who is doing great things in the world, purely out of love and filled with gratitude. And I believe the same for you. I cannot wait to see more of what’s in store for you.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Asian Vegan Kitchen on Forrest Street was a surprising delight! I would def go back there and recommend to anyone looking for a good plant based meal. Their coconut soup was so good.

I would also try Wholesum Juice Bar if you’re on a cleanse and need something while you’re out and about. The juices are cold-pressed on site and they don’t add any preservatives.

Dulce Vegan makes incredible vegan desserts that your guests won’t even know are vegan if you don’t tell them!

I haven’t been yet, but I can’t wait to check out Apache. Some of the events look phenomenal and the open mic vibe is def my scene. So that one’s on my list.

And I’m a sucker for just grabbing a coffee at IKEA and walking through the showroom.. I always leave with something random I didn’t know I needed.

If you have kids — LEGOLand. But I would def go there myself and play on a quiet day, even if I didn’t have kids.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to dedicate this shoutout to my teacher, Liana Shanti, for the many ways she has enriched my life and helped myself and thousands of others reclaim their power and rewrite their story. The path she has forged with her teachings and programs is leading people out of fear, shame, and insecurity, and into an entirely new territory of self-love. That can be scary, especially for people who have never felt that kind of love before, or who are afraid to admit that they didn’t receive it in the first place. But she in unwavering in her reminder that each of us is powerful and divinely guided. A million heartfelt thanks to her for her dedication and the example she sets.
