Meet Matthew Sapp | Entrepreneur & Owner of Hunny Jalapeno

We had the good fortune of connecting with Matthew Sapp and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matthew, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When we started Hunny Jalapeno we were craving more quality time together as a family. We love the freedom of making our own schedule and the opportunity to be more present for our kids. Our business allows us to express our creativity and passion for food. We love experimenting with flavors and sharing these experiences with others. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see someone else enjoying our food as much as we do.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My fiance and I both come from backgrounds in the restaurant and brewery world. We both have an appreciation for how the service industry works. My time as a brewer & bartender made me appreciate and understand building flavor profiles and working with ingredients. This transfers into the creative process of our sandwich ideas. If you haven’t had our food yet, our niche is sandwiches & wraps that are classic-based with creative taste. Our most popular menu item currently is the ‘Taco TKO’. It features our own queso blend, beef, organic chili lime tortilla crumbles, onions, cilantro, & housemade taco sauce aioli. Fun fact: We craft all of our sauces, aiolis, and cheese blends.
Taking pride in our ingredients is just as important to us as our branding & marketing. We do all of our own graphic design for menus, promotional materials, and social media content. We also created the logo. The name Hunny Jalapeno perfectly captures the sweet & spicy dynamic of both our food cravings and our relationship. Not all of our food is spicy!!! Our name represents the balance and harmony we strive for in our personal and professional lives. While fun and rewarding, it’s not always easy. Sometimes it’s the printer, other days it’s the wind, and then there’s days when your go-to ingredients aren’t available. Each challenge is just another opportunity to be creative.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We’ve lived in Atlanta for almost two years and still exploring. Obviously, we like to spend our time at breweries or places with good beer. Fun fact, we’re both Cicerone certified.
We like to eat and drink local to support the communities that support us. An ideal day off for us would start with breakfast and mimosas at Belle & Lilly’s Caribbean Brunch house, an impromtu tattoo at Golden Anchor Tattoo, then hitting up any local antique stores or the Southern Thrift Market, add in a stop at Pure Taqueria for our favorite margaritas and guacamole. Chamblee Tap and Market has become a go-to for mingling, watching sports and finding specialty beers. We would have to finish off the day at Frosty Caboose! The best ice cream ever! Seriously the chocolate PB and Banana Pudding ice creams are a must try.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Hunny Jalapeno became a reality thanks to the support of our good friends Bobby & Teresa. Ya’ll believed in our vision and inspired us with your story of entrepreneurship. Shoutout to all of our favorite places that continue to host us; Smyrna Stout Brothers, Oak Street Bottleshop, Pontoon Brewing, Variant Brewing, Proper Hop Taphouse, Round Trip Brewing. Shoutout to DJ Empress Rah for giving us the opportunity to share our food with other creatives at Controllerise.
Extra special shoutout to my beautiful fiancé Misty for being a badass partner and helping me with our food pop-up when she’s not working at her job. We’re looking forward to sharing our food and growing this adventure…COMING SOON!
