We had the good fortune of connecting with Ebony Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ebony, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
In a simple word, healing. Whether it’s an illness, a heartbreak, some form of trauma, or even being born, there is not a person alive that has not experienced some event that they needed to heal from. Knowing this and knowing that as humans our bodies are self- healing, and the passion that my partner and I have for healing led to creating Kismet Honey-a Wellness Solutions Group. Our business allows us to use our creativity to practice healing, as well as educate and advocate for it. Being able to combine so many passions into one great purpose gave us the momentum to start and never look back.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
In our practice, my partner Zakiyyah Smith and I are Reiki Masters. On record, Reiki has ties to being an ancient Japanese healing technique. We focus hand positions over the major Chakra’s in the body and in doing so we promote stress relief, induce relaxation, and help to shift the mental, physical, and emotional imbalances within the body. We are able to do this with one-on-one sessions, groups, in-person, and virtual. It is wild. No two sessions have ever been the same. Helping people connect to their self-healing powers is one of the most special things I have ever been a part of. Along with Reiki, we also facilitate workshops, retreats and are launching a coaching program that teaches people how to heal themselves. Off top, what sets us apart is that we are two Black Women who have stepped outside of the box of just exercise and nutrition to bring another element of healing to our community. Bringing this to our community is beyond exciting, because most people we come in contact have never heard of what we do and how we do it. Oddly enough, we started our business at the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic. We had done our certification training just prior and decided to not hold back at all. It wasn’t easy because we have intentions of operating in a corporate wellness sector, and as we all know the pandemic shut down many offices leaving employees to work remotely. While this has been a bit of a damper, it hasn’t stopped us from building connections and networking. It has worked out well for us and we’ve participated several times as guest facilitators for during mental health and/or healing projects, so it’s been a blessing. The lessons learned along the way are the age old ones. Do not quit and believe in yourself. By following these lessons, we’ve been able to build a successful business. Another lesson is to let your creativity serve you. Thing’s don’t always have to be cookie cutter and done the way someone else has always done it. By tapping into our creativity, we’ve not just built a business during a pandemic, but we’ve have a blast doing so. I want the world to know that Black Women are immersed in a world of health education and healing. In this world, we know that by healing ourselves, we heal the generations before us and those after us. We also have special ties to help heal Black Men and Black Children who are often overlooked and disregarded.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Los Angeles is rich in culture. I’d be taking my best friend to the hood gems like Simply Wholesome and Hilltop Cafe. We’d visit the coffee shops in Leimert Park like Hot and Cool Cafe & Harun Coffee, and great spots in Inglewood like Stuff I Eat and Sip and Sonder. I exercise daily so I’d take them to hit some great hills in the View Park/Windsor Hills and Baldwin Hills Estates. You can’t have people come to LA without going to the beach. Some of the most fun, interesting, and exciting places to check out streets lined with old homes with beautiful architecture and parks that give you great views of sunrises and sunsets. I want the LA spots not on all the TV shows.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My children deserve the biggest shoutout that there is. My daughter is a 22 year old aspiring filmmaker and my son is an 11 year shark and dinosaur enthusiast. Since they were both very young, they have been a part of my journey as an entrepreneur. They were with me in the early mornings when I would travel to see personal training clients, they were there cheering me on as I reached Best Selling Author status, when I went back to school to complete my underdergrad studies in Health Education and then start Grad school to pursue my Master’s Degree in Psychology. Now, they have encouraged me with this new venture with Kismet Honey. It’s been a blessing to know that I have been able to share this journey with them and encourage them to push through no matter what. It doesn’t matter how old you are, how much life you’ve already lived, if you haven’t fulfilled your purpose and passion, there is still work to do and they have help push me and stand by that over the past decade.
